Allergies and switching again!

    Allergies and switching again!

I haven't been around awhile, as our computer was down for over a week and a half. Before that,I was sick,on and off, flu, colds, etc. Anyway, back to square one again with Maizy, our allergic to everthing dalmatian. I put her on Timberwolf OceanBlue and she seemed to be doing better. I ordered 2 more bags and she started getting worse.I am almost done with the second ordered bag, and she is terribly red  and itchy. I'm seriously thinking of putting her on a vegetarian food, like Avoderm?   Does anyone use this food and has it helped?  I also give her salmon oil caps and vitamin E.  I've tried almost every food out there.

What foods have you tried?  I really dislike the vegetarian foods and would personally try everything else first.

Is it possible that she's allergic to the salmon oil capsules?

If she's not allergic to Salmon, have you tried Taste of the Wild Salmon/Potatoe formula?

It has a LOT less ingredients then the Timberwolf formula's.

I too am not a huge fan of vegetarian diets, as most of them are way overloaded with grains, which can and usually does make allergies that much worse.

Have you tried any grain free foods?

I have fed Avoderm and my dog ate it and did ok on it.  What about Solid Gold or Wellness?  I had better results with Harley on those foods.  Although I do not currently feed him either(TOTW is what he eats now)

What about adding probiotics?  Have you changed anything at all in the house..such as cleaners?  I have also heard that some people believe that a dog will detox when taken off one food and put on another.

I'm currently trying Wellness Core Ocean and its pretty good, it is pricey though.  Better than the OB for us.

Beef & fish are excellent protein for Bugsy so we have had good results with SG Barking at the Moon

Only problem we have with the Core Ocean is it seems to go through him too fast and it isn't kcal dense enough to make economic sense for my big eater.  His poop is fine but he seems to be pooping more and quite soon after eating. I am trying to source the Orjen fish locally with no luck so far

Is it possible that she's allergic to the salmon oil capsules?

      Good point; Jessie can't have salmon oil capsules because she's allergic to salmon.  Is she allergic to chicken; A few months ago Timberwolf admitted that their foods have chicken fat, and some other ingredients that weren't listed. I don't think you can trust their ingredient list. Is she allergic to house dust mites; this is a bad time of the year for them. You may want to try the NuSal-T shampoo; it's one of the best shampoos for relieving itchy skin;

Good luck; I hope Maizy's skin clears up soon.

Thanks for the replies. I never thought of the salmon oil caps, i did have her on fish oil caps before, but figured the salmon was better. I may go back to fish oil caps. I know I won't get Timberwolf again. I did have her on Solid Gold and she was better, but didn't seem to care for it. The Wellness Core I looked at, but as I recall, I thought there was something in ther that would trigger her allergies again,I'll check again. I have tried almost everything out there. It could be dustmites too. It's been such a long, cold winter here, the dogs aren't out much.I vacuum everyday. I do know I bought Glade Oil Freshner and the whole house wreaked and she was itching. I pulled those out and gave them to my daughter. I'll try that shampoo, too. Back to reading dog food labels again.

Have you tried something like Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato?

    • Gold Top Dog

Ahhh all these dog foods your listing is making my skin crawl! haha

I have a dog who has severe food allergies and I would NEVER feed her any of that stuff...

Get rid of Grains (Corn, Wheat, Rice, Barley, etc), Soy, Generic Additives, and certain portein sources. Get her on a Fish diet then slowly bring in other meats. When I did this I realized Kayla had a bad reaction to Chicken & Turkey.

I know I preach about it all the time but seriously... try NATURAL BALANCE! When I read threads like this I just want to be like "yes! i know your pain! just trust me on this one..." NB allergy forumlas are GREAT and it's the only thing my dog will eat and can eat now.

If it's not a Grain issues then there are lots of Veggie & Holistic diets to try... but seriously... just try Natural Balance.

Kayla also itches around Fabreeze products (air sanitizers), and certain protein shampoos.

Best of Luck! Let us know how she does!

Well as it turns out, I did find one culprit. My husband mentioned he's been giving her Natural Choice Crunchy Treats with Apple, and said maybe that was the problem. Now I bought Apple and one with Carrots, thinking wheat-free.. Now I came home with nothing in new dog food yet, but I checked the ingredients on both the apple and carrot-----POULTRY-FAT!  Anything with feathers-----forget it ----why do they always add poultry-fat. I'm sure for taste, but why in some of these Allergy Formulas. I also see whole grains, which could be,too.    I have tried a fish and sweet potatoe, but Miss Finicky is not nuts about sweet potatoes. I will go back to a fish based one, just don't know which one yet.   I'll keep in touch and see how this on-going saga goes---soooo frustrating!

    • Gold Top Dog

Forgot to add, I did try Venison and Sweet Potatoe, but as I said, Miss Finicky wasn't too nuts about it.  I think what ever I end up with, probably fish based, she will just have to eat it, since they say it usually takes 2 monthes to possibly help the allergy issue.

ahhh then I feel your pain... Natural Balance was my SAVIOR! You've deff got a picky little eater over there! :o)

Maybe do some researching on homecooking? (I was thinking about it but it's too expensive in my opinion)

Bugsy is the same if it had feathers its a no no.  Look at the Orjen fish or the wellness core fish.  Both are pricey, the Orjen has more kcal per cup, but it is nice to see fish based food with higher protein levels.  And not even a whiff of poultry - or so they say

    good luck!

Believe me I totally know how frustrating and expensive it can get with allergies.  Have you seen a specialist for this yet?

It is worth the cost for at least allergy testing rather than trying to switch around to find the culprit.  Sometimes if it isn't food you did it all for nothing.  I know when I walk that road again I will go that route which in the end is less frustrating and cheaper sometimes.  Good luck to you.
