What do you think of these ingredients?

I disagree.  I could be wrong, and it's certainly happened before, but......

Whole grains contain all three parts of the kernel.  The Bran, which contains antioxidants, B vitamins and fiber.  The Germ, B vitamins, protein, minerals and healthy fats and the Endosperm, with carbs, proteins and small amounts of vitamins and minerals.

If the ingredient list doesn't way WHOLE whatever, I just don't assume that it is, unless I can find on their website evidence to the contrary.

Millet I don't like, beet pulp isnt a fav, brewers dried yeast

I'm with you on the beet pulp, and brewer's yeast, but I'm curious as to why you don't like millet. I think it's a good grain option (if you choose to serve grains) as it is gluten-free.

Okay, but "whole grain brown rice" would be redundant..because the "brown" means it's whole grain. The reason brown rice is brown is because it still has the bran and germ intact. White rice is not a whole grain, because the bran and germ have been removed...

This food might be great for a performance dog....I can't say that it wouldn't be.  But, you asked for opinions, so ya got mine! Tongue Tied

I'm not knocking your opinion! I respect everyones thoughts on the matter - that is why I asked :)

I really don't know anything about rice as I don't eat it (can't stand the texture). I thought that brown rice was brown because it wasn't stripped like white rice is. I really don't know though. So they sell whole grain rice at the super market? (i've never looked)

chelsea_b is absolutely correct. We learned that in a cooking class in college! haha. When something is not white its whole wheat/grain. All other "white" products are bleached. There's like a whole story that goes along with it how a long time ago some man created "white bread" and only royalty could afford this "amazing" white bread, haha. (yeah i forget the story word by word) Soon enough white bread was a trend; but now everyone is realizing whole wheat/brown is actually healthier for you since it still has all the nutrients.

White rice is not bleached. A whole grain of rice has a husk and a bran layer. After the husk is removed you have brown rice. After the husk and bran are removed you have white rice.

WELL then maybe the teacher was talking about white BREAD. Because I was told, taught, and tested that bleach is added to grain & flour to create the white color and to remove the nutrients. If I'm wrong sorry, but that's what I always knew/thought since college. One thing I do know is Brown & Whole Wheat/Grain is the same exact thing.

White flour is bleached, mainly for shelf stability, but the only things involved in making white rice are abrasive rollers, water, and air.

The learning never ends on this forum does it? ;)

Just to add to the complication.. you can get unbleached white flour. Big Smile Wheat is like rice. If you remove the germ and bran, you're left with the endosperm (which is what white rice is..just endosperm), and when ground up, that's "white" flour (albeit unbleached, and a bit beiger than white). If you bleach THAT, you get what most of us just call "flour"..the uber processed stuff that's in EVERYTHING. They're both "white flour", one's just a little whiter than the other. Wink

And unbleached, white flour makes amazing cakes. YUM! I don't use bleached flour, when I cook, and whole grain flour is too heavy for a light, airy recipe.

I think it looks like a fine food, for a dog without issues. I like the protein and fat levels (my dogs have always done well on something around 30% or a little less, when they were on dry, JMO). I like the fish oil, built in. Seems like it's pretty decent, especially if the price is right (and free? Is right!).

A bit grainy and I like WHOLE grains better.  Millet I don't like, beet pulp isnt a fav, brewers dried yeast.....it isn't terrible, but not all that great.  I guess I'd give it 2 of 5 stars.

I am curious, why don't you like millet?

the price is right..  It might be the best food you ever fed your dog. If you don't try it you will never know.  It is very sad that all companies can't be like Natura and put the n/a information out to the public. One can only guess how many carbs are in this food ?

One thing I do when I switch foods is e-mail them. I want to see how soon they respond. Call an 800 # talk to them. If something goes wrong can your Vet get in touch.... Ask how much animal protein is in the feed.

Also ask where it is made ? Their own facility , if not by who. Is an EU certified. Or have any certifications. Sources of the ingredients. US or imported from China?

If you don't feel comfortable after talking or e-mailing donate it to a local shelter.

Do you have a web site address? I could not locate one.

Actually, you can figure it out. 5 things make up dog food. Protein, fat, moisture (water), carbohydrates (which includes fiber), and ash (minerals). Those five values added together always equals 100%. So if you know four of them, you can know the fifth. So this food is 27% protein, 15% fat, 10% moisture, 5.75% ash = 57.75%. 100 - 57.75 = 42.25% carbs.

However, this might not be exact, because those other four values are "minimums" or "maximums". Protein and fat are minimums, so the actual amount could theoretically be 30% and 20%, and moisture and ash are maximums, so they might only be 8% and 4% or something. If that was the case, it would actually be..38% carbs. Not a huge difference, so 40%, + or - a couple percentage points, is a really good bet.
