    Unhealthful And Dangerous Foods

Just thought I'd post this. It's a very good reminder to us pet owners!

    Unhealthful And Dangerous Foods

These foods may be toxic, cause allergies or digestive problems, or simply lack nutritional value:

    • Chocolate can cause death or serious health problems.
    • Liver, if more than three servings per week are fed, can lead to vitamin A toxicity.
    • Onions can cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells (Heinz body hemolytic anemia), which can lead to serious illness or death.
    • Bones can splinter and lodge in the throat, stomach or intestines, causing severe illness or death.
    • Raw meat and poultry may harbor dangerous bacteria.
    • Cooked pork contains fat globules that are larger than those of other meats. This fat can clog small blood vessels and cause serious illness or death.
    • Raw eggs often harbor dangerous bacteria, and the whites deplete essential nutrients required for good health.
    • Tuna contains oils that can cause inflammation of the fatty tissues leading to long-term impairment of health.
    • Raw fish contains an enzyme that can deprive your dog of essential nutrients required for good health.
    • Cured meats contain nitrates and toxic preservatives that your dog cant digest properly.
    • Spicy or greasy foods may cause indigestion.
    • Vegetarian or other special diets may lack essential nutrients required for health.
    • Grapes and raisins.

grapes and raisins need to be added to the list

    • Gold Top Dog

    Yes they do! Thanks!

pork, cooked or raw, is perfectly safe.

Most dogs can happily eat raw poultry and raw bones- it's cooked bones that are prone to splinter and cause health problems.

Nothing wrong with feeding tuna from time to time, nothing wrong with feeding raw eggs now and again. And as far as I know the only raw fish that isn't safe to feed is atlantic salmon- other fish are fine fed raw. Raw oysters can be dangerous, though.

And my dogs dispute the idea that spicy or greasy foods can cause indigestion.

      Many types of tuna are high in mercury;    http://www.environmentaldefense.org/page.cfm?tagID=16314 ;

More about mercury in some tunas

Some kinds of tuna are high in mercury, a serious health risk for kids and women of childbearing age.

    • Avoid bluefin tuna, since it's both high in mercury and is being depleted by overfishing.
    • When buying canned tuna, choose 'light' skipjack tuna over 'white' albacore tuna. Not only does 'light' have three times less mercury, it's less expensive too

I agree with mudpuppy that pork is fine.

" So I'm back in school and as part of a take home final from heck I had to prove causation between Salmonella serovar typhimurium and gallbladder abscess, sepsis and mental confusion using Bradford Hill Criteria for causation. As a result, over the past week I've read about 30 different peer-reviewed journal articles on all aspects of Salmonella and Salmonellosis.

As a result I am no long going to feed my dogs raw eggs. There are too many emergent MULTI DRUG RESISTANT salmonella strains out there, and the biggest and brightest pool of contamination is....drumroll...raw and undercooked egg and egg products. Microbial contamination I take as part of life - multidrug resistant microbial contamination is a whole nother story.

So I am officially reversing my position on raw eggs. I will henceforth cook the living tar out of them. And absolutely no freakin shells."

I haven't fed raw eggs since reading this post, but it's JMO.

My dogs still get raw eggs on a regular basis.  They've never had so much as a sore tummy from them.  They get tuna once in a while, if I have no other fish in the house and they haven't had any fish for the week.  I do prefer to feed small fish though, sardines, salmon and such.  And they get raw meat and poultry every day.  No issues there.  But I make sure its handled the way I would handle any meat I feed my family.  As for the liver, we do liver almost everyday when they are on total raw diets, but I don't think its a whole serving.

Is Xylitol a food?  Its used in foods so maybe it should be added to the list.

Aight so I need an opinion then... One raw egg a week or should I cook it?... I've been told its good for a dog... now I'm just confused.

Macadamia nuts are also toxic to dogs, even in smallish amounts.

I also don't think feeding raw eggs are safe. Some dogs do not handle raw meat well, and some strains of salmonella can hurt any dog, regardless of how well they handle raw meats. I guess its one of those things where you have to think if the benefits outweigh the risk--many people feed raw eggs with no problem, but I will never feel comfortable doing that.
