Probiotics

    Probiotics

I see alot of folks talking about adding a probiotic to their dogs diet.   Is there any reason to add it to a healthy dogs diet ?

Now yogurt - while have probiotics - also has protein.   I'm not counting that in this question.   The fact that Prancer thinks its ice cream is good enough reason for me to give it to her (I mix her liquid B vits into it).

I use them regularly, for Teenie, because I discovered on accident that they clear up her skin funk. Also, probiotics can help to prevent bladder stones.

Emma gets them if she's taken antibiotics, or if her tummy is off. I've been using Solaray's CranDophilus, for them. I like it, a lot. BOTH of them can use the cranberry, and it's got several different strains of probiotics.

It can help maintain a healthy gut. Dogs that get into trash, drink from puddles, etc can be helped. The average dog that does not have bad gas or loose bowels most likely has good balance of flora. I have heard that owners have the best results with live cultures like PB 8. They are found in refrigerated sections of health stores or supermarkets.  Many owners use pro-biotics after giving a regimen of anti-biotics. Some feel that yeast infections can be helped also.

Good post.  I've used them in the face of diarrhea with Otto before with good success.  For the average dog they pare probably not needed.  You can't really OD on them so if you would like to use them daily they probably won't help.  It seems all the "natural" pet stores have been selling a brand that comes in a little gold tin lately.  I may buy some to keep on hand just in case I need them.

Ok, so its as I thought then - that they are used for medical reasons and are not needed routinely.   Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something good LOL

Prancer gets yogurt daily - its her daily treat mixed with her b vitamins and fish oil (lovely combo but she doesn't seem to mind it).  The B vitamins are NASTY - since she's so small I have to give a liquid unless I want to try and cut a pill into 8 parts !  YIKES.   She won't eat the fish oil capsule (she can spit them a whole foot LOL) but if I put it into the yogurt it slides right down - if I want to make the yogurt extra special I'll pierce the capsule and drain the contents into the yogurt (but lately I've taken a few too many fish oil baths - I'm trying to reduce the number of times I have to take a second shower to get the fish oil off of me !)
