What can I add to Maze's kibble?

What can I add to Maze's kibble?

To help her out? I don't want to switch to Raw. It's not for me. So I was wondering what can I add to Maze's meals to give her that extra help? I've heard about adding raw eggs and such. Also what supplements would be good for her?

I'm looking right now to give her something for her coat. Ever since I switched to EVO from Pedigree her coat has gotten ALOT shinier but it still lacking luster.

Fish Oil.  Body oil not liver.  So no Cod Liver Oil.  Flax works too, but animal based is always better.

You could always add rawmeat/fruit/veg/organs to her kibble or buy a pre-made raw product such as natures variety medallions etc. For her coat you could add eggs, tinned sardines/mackarel. You can still give her the benefit of raw foods without going the full hog. Many people feed half half or just add as kibble toppers.

I feed kibble as well and use raw egg and canned sardine as my toppers.  You can also give the dog raw chicken cuts.  You can get big 10lb bags of them from Walmart for like $4.  Feed it to the dog raw, skin bones and all (just feed outside or on a surface that can be washed).

Unfortunetly where I live, I can't buy the pre-made raw diet and we don't have a Walmart (Yes my town is SAD) But I am on friendly terms with the butcher so maybe I can talk to him.

I had no idea you could feed a dog eggs.. I always thought it gave them gas. Or is that only cooked eggs?

Why not liver oil? (Just curious! ) Can you get the fish oil at a drug store like Shoppers Drug Mart? Or would I have to go a health food store?

Would this also help with her eye boogies?

You should be able to get frozen chicken at any supermarket (my husband and I like chicken and use in it casseroles so we always get 10lb bags of chicken thighs).  We don't have a Walmart nearby (we have another chain, Meijer, that was started here so Walmart can't really compete).

If you know a butcher, that's even better!  Lots of choice there.  I have the opposite problem - I don't know anyone and I only know of big supermarkets, so I don't know where to get the "extras" like leftover meat and bones.

I don't cook Kenya's eggs b/c she likes them raw.  Why waste time cooking them?  She will eat plain raw eggs if I give them too her, but I typically put it on her kibble.

I don't know where to get fish oils, so I just get canned sardines (packed in water) at the grocery store and use that for coat condition.

I also use raw eggs in Lillie's food. I think it makes her coat really shiny and sleek.

A question on the sardines. Does it make them have gas? If not I might start giving Lillie those too.

With the eggs do I give her the shell as well, if she'll eat it, or just crack it over her kibbles?

    • Gold Top Dog

Well if you're only adding 1 egg as a treat so to say, I wouldn't worry about the shell.  Kibble is pretty complete on its own.

My gas king doesn't get gas from Sardines.  He gets if from milk products, corn, wheat, kleenex, cheerios....not sardines though.

Ok! I'm glad I don't have a gas queen. Lol. Would it do any harm if I added a small amount of ground beef with her dinner as well as the egg and sardines? (Not all at once!) But like egg and beef one night and sardines the next? Should I use the toppers every night?
(Sorry I'm asking so many questions!! This is just highly interesting to me)

I have no idea.  Kenya does a deep belch after every meal, but I only feed her once a day, so she gorges.  I've never heard/smelled either dog fart.

Eggs are a fantastic protein source, plus they have vitamins, minerals, and good fat. Great for dogs. Gas totally depends on the dog. Cherokee's got a pretty solid stomach, she can switch kibble daily, eat any and all "people foods", raw beef, whole bones, and she hardly ever farts or has anything less than very solid poop. If she does, I know she ate something seriously wrong for her. Jaz on the other hand gets gas from like a grain of rice, and his poop is hardly ever really solid.

Eggshells are totally your call. Cherokee won't eat them, and the thought of them scares some people, but I know a lot of people just hand their dog a whole egg.

Fish oil..you can pretty much get anywhere. I dunno what Shoppers Drug Mart is, but if it's anything like Rite Aid or CVS, yeah, you can probably get fish oil capsules there. You can also sometimes find bottles of liquid at dog food stores, or you can order it online. Cherokee likes Nature's Logic sardine oil a lot, and I've gotten good results with it.

Liver oil's got a ton of vitamin A and D, which is great if you're feeding a homemade diet, but kibbles got plenty of them already, and they're fat soluble, so it's possible to overdose on them.

Oh yeah, and beef's fine. Cooked or raw. It's Cherokee's favorite.

I know with Lillie if she eats crappy food she has gas that will run you out of town. But now that i have her on better food she doesnt have it. I just give Lillie the egg not the shell cuz she wont eat the shell. I've even broke up the shell but she still spits it out. I give her 2 eggs a day. One at each meal.

Hmm.. I think I'm going to start buying doubles of meat and eggs from now on. Lol!
