Need help getting my dog to quit looking like i starve her!!

Would like to know the top 5 brands of dog food to help my 11 month old female Irish Setter put weight on.She doesnt look like I "starve" her but it does look like I do not feed her enough. She gets 4 cups of dry dog food,a can of wet,and 2 eggs but reading the blogs and forums I have figured out I am not feeding her the right dry food so any help would be greatly appreciated.Oh yeah I have switched her food 5 times now and I know that isnt good for her so anything that I can stick to for more than a month will be great.

It's not always a bad thing to switch foods. Dog food manufacturer's would love to have you believe you need to feed just one brand for your dog's whole life, but variety is very important. As far as gaining weight, one food I've heard that puts weight on dogs really fast is Bil Jac. I'm not a big fan of the ingredients, but if your dog really does need to gain weight then it could be a short term solution and then switch to something different.

Puppies should actually be kept lean because it's easier on their growing joints. Of course they shouldn't be underweight. Is there anyway you could post pics? I would also make sure that she doesn't have worms or parasites that are keeping her from gaining weight.

It's possible that just feeding her a more nutrient dense diet will help to put weight on her. Some of the brands that I like:

    Innova

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul

    Canidae

    Nature's Variety

    Fromm

    Solid Gold

I did have pics of her looking really bad at one point but she has gotten better since then and I have deleted them.

But if this helps her ribs are not showing anymore but her hip bones are.And everytime I take her out in public people are always commenting on her being skinny.

I know she should be lean but I dont think her hips bones should be visible.I have had 2 previous Irish Setters before but never had a problem with their weight.

Thanks for telling me that switching foods so often wasnt a bad thing cuz I was starting to worry that I was harming her that way.

Yeah, I don't think her hip bones should be visible either. Have you had her checked recently for parasites? It's so easy for dogs to pick them up- they walk through something, lick their paws or even drink out of a puddle and voila! ;)

I have had her the vet and she is fine medically.Vet just told me to keep switching foods until I found one that will put weight on her.

Do you think if I stopped feeding her dog food and started cooking or give her raw meat that would be better?

     What are you feeding now?

I have recently switched her from purina one large breed formula to purina proplan performance formula.

I feel a little dumb.I didnt know there was so many types of dog foods out there.Around here everyone feeds their dogs pedigree, purina,ol'roy, that kind of dog food.

Think i'm gonna try the Innova dog food.

I loved Innova for my dogs...But I have one that can't eat chicken so I had to change...When ever I have had to put weight on my dogs I use puppy food...My Shepherd is on California Natural lamb but I use the puppy even though she is 21/2 years..I dont know much about pro plan I have never fed it....I think maybe a change in food might be helpful....you are giving 4 cups she should be keeping weight on.. I only feed 2 cups...I hope that helps it works for me...I would change her food

Yeah I've been looking at all the dog food websites and going to go try Innova.I thought I knew a lot about dogs but I dont think I know as much as I thought. But it's fun learning new things everyday.Especially when it has to do with dogs.

I have been giving her 2 eggs also with her food cuz that is the only way she will even touch it.Plus it seems to make her coat really shiny.

Well actually I think I might try the california natural puppy food instead.

Sorry to confuse you even more, but i wouldnt bother with california natural. It is a very bland food usually reserved for allergy dogs. There are many other  foods with more protein and fat than CN,which has a moderate amount.

    Go for something like

    Innova
    Timberwolf Organics
    Natures variety
    Orijen

    etc etc etc

Do you think if I stopped feeding her dog food and started cooking or give her raw meat that would be better?

I would stick with a premium quality dog food, and add raw/cooked meats as toppers,Look for the fattier cuts, and oily tinned fish is also good such as sardines and mackarel

I wouldn't feed California Natural as a first choice for a puppy that needs to gain weight. I don't think it's ideal other than dogs with food allergies because I think dogs need more variety than that. Of course if you're going to add other things in small amounts like canned food and eggs, then I think it would be okay.

Innova would be an excellent choice IMO. If you do choose that one then just make sure to transition very slowly. It's a calorie dense formula and a lot of dogs have trouble digesting it at first.

Don't feel bad about feeding the foods that you have. Everyone has to start somewhere. When I first started researching foods I would read the ingredient lists of the grocery store brands and not have a CLUE what I was looking at. lol Then I thought I found the best food- which was Nutro Natural Choice and later found out it was midgrade. It's a process learning about all of the ingredients and foods out there. :)

If she is healthy and active, if she can run and play all day with other dogs and not quit, why worry?  I have lived with dogs that did not gain weight until well into adulthood. (Dobe *** was seven, terv male was four).  Dogs that are slightly underweight have a greater chance of a longer healthier life.  If you want reassurance, run a thyroid panel.  If you want to try and add some weight, try more frequent meals/snacks.  She may just be running it right off (she is a setter after all).  Give me a lean dog any day of the week if they are raring to go at a moments notice.  If she is intact, that may also contribute to differences in weight gain (didnt matter with the dobe she was spayed at 6 months).
