Menu Foods recall expands

The recalled products originally were from the New Jersey and Kansas plants. Then they said an inter-company shipment affected the Ontario plant.

They only have one other plant - South Dakota. Natura is made there.

If I am understanding this correctly, then wheat free foods that were run AFTER foods containing wheat gluten were run were contaminated, wouldn't this mean that some of the wheat gluten would have had to have gotten into the WHEAT FREE FOODS?  What does this mean to dogs that have an allergy to wheat?

This says to me that no what what the label says, no matter what the ingredient list reads, no matter what the brand is......we just can't depend on it being accurate, truthful, and even to the point of totally false in some cases (we make our own food at our own plants, we do not use ingredients for other countires, etc.

This is from Itchmo site  (Menu Foods goofed. Go Natural is not recalled.)

Here's what Foster & Smith says about it:

In a precautionary measure, [linkhttp://www.menufoods.com/recall/PressReleaseUS05022007.htm]Menu Foods has expanded its recall list [/link]to include any foods - even formulas with no wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate - that may have been processed utilizing the same equipment as previously-recalled products. We have been informed today by Menu Foods that a batch of Drs. Foster & Smith Country Classic Dinners™ Chicken Stew canned cat foods (#27046) may have been processed sequentially before or after a product that is currently recalled.

Wow. This tells me a lot. Mostly, that I can probably improve Ben's health even more by completely taking him off any commercial foods. I always suspected that was the case, but here's the hard facts. Cross contamination is a fact of life in these plants.

There was one allergy food that I heard of that claimed the equipment was 100% dedicated to their allergy formula(s) but I can't remember now which one is was. There's only two that Ben can eat anyway - NB duck and EVO RM.

Thanks Kelly. I have some canned EVO and was wondering if it was safe; sounds like it is.

I've gone in and updated the locked master list.  Please feel free to keep 'em coming.  If you Email me instead of pm'ing, you can attach a list for me.  Honestly, I'm about to KILL for high speed internet again!

I'm not sure. I know some foods that don't contain wheat gluten were recalled because they followed foods that did in the production runs. At this point, since they are acknowledging cross-contamination, I'm avoiding all Menu products. Sad, because I think some brands are still trustworthy. Too bad their manufacturer isn't.

At first, I thought that I would compeletly avoid anything made at Menu, including Eagle Pack canned. But then I remember reading about the different grades/foods that are made in different Menu plants. Eagle Pack canned is made at Menu and their website says their food is safe and tested.
I'm going to go with that.
The way things are going... it gets worse and worse in general. DH just read me an article in todays newspaper where they just ordered stores in Alabama and Mississippi to stop selling catfish,,as it comes from China and contains illegal and banned antibiotics.
I guess maybe this is all good in the end, we are taking second looks at food imported in from China,, hopefully all imported foods are being watched carefully.

There was no way to tell that Menu foods produced Natural Choice Nutro Large breed puppy .  I still have a 40# bag of it with a small amount used.  But the recall said that the dry food is safe for the dogs.

This stuff is aggravating.  But my pups love home cooked food quite well.  :  )

Menu Foods does not make any DRY food at all.

So, perhaps this food is ok even though it has rice gluten as like the 3rd ingredient?

It just would be appropriate if the label stated where all the ingredients were from.  When it states made in the USA, it is not necessarily telling that that wheat/rice "gluten" was from China.

Nutro has never said that they don't buy from China, but they did say:

    (2) Independent laboratory tests have confirmed that the rice protein concentrate (also known as rice gluten) used in Nutro's ;pet foods does not contain melamine.

Nutro makes their dry food in their own plant.

I'm still concerned that some of the adulteration might have taken place on U.S. soil.  So, I would be worried about ANY gluten or concentrate.  They haven't proven TO ME, anyway, that it also wasn't done here.

I had used Wysong Rabbit for 5 months and the canned packaging was horrible so I quit using it.  Turns out every canned but rabbit was made at Menu.  So, where was the rabbit made, I wondered?  Again, it was really, really  bad quality control.  So, I wrote this morning and asked.

Answer:  It is made by Wysong. Hmmmpffff.  I didn't have time to email back and say, "made by" means NOTHING.   Absolutely nothing.

Well, that just irritated me and I just wanted to write that down somewhere!
