Here's the info on where NB is manufactured (from a previous post)
Natural Balance: Not made by Menu Foods. Dry food is made at their own plant
then shipped to the Diamond plant where it is bagged. They have their own people
on site all of the time. Canned food is made at their own plant, then shipped to
American Nutrition in Utah where it is canned. Natural Balance has their own
line at American Nutrtion and no other canned foods are run through NB's
    equipment.

That is incorrect. Natural Balance was less than forthcoming about the manufacturing of their foods, but [linkhttp://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=223]this site[/link] finally got a straight answer.

“In regards to our products, please know that our dry and canned formulas are “co-packed” at a separate facility in the United States. Our dry products are co-packed at a Diamond facility and our canned products are co-packed at American Nutrition. What this means, is that we use their machinery to manufacture our OWN products. We also have our OWN quality control over seeing any manufacturing/production of our products. Further, all of our products are tested prior to production, after production, and then once again at our facility before the product ever leaves for distribution.”

I question that they have their own quality control, since they left the buying of their ingredients up to Diamond.

The rice protein concentrate was imported from China by San Francisco-based Wilbur-Ellis. Herrick says the concentrate, which is being tested, is suspected to have melamine, as it was the only new ingredient. Recalled Natural Balance products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry dog foods, dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

Wilbur-Ellis CEO John Thacher said his company sold the concentrate to five pet-food makers, but that most of it went to two firms. One of the primary companies was Diamond Pet Foods, which packs some of the Natural Balance product but doesn't use the concentrate in any Diamond-made foods, says Diamond spokesman Jim Fallon. The other major customer, which Thacher would not name, tested the rice protein and found no melamine

How is that possible? ... unless the melamine is added afterwards? If HALF of the batch has it... the other half would by virtue HAVE to be contaminated? Right?

None of this is adding up and I'm truly getting worried. It's in the super premiums .. and i'm looking at my canned food with side-long glances (my dry doesn't contain grain... not that that makes me feel better!). I think my kids are getting home cooked for a few days.

Sera_J - I agree - sounds impossible to me also.    ALL my canned foods have Brown Rice (multiple brands, multiple varieties), I'm going back to see if they have any "rice concentrates" in them.
I"ve ordered the b-natural supplements yesterday.   I'm going to home cook also, I just can't take this anymore

ETA:  Sooner - thanks for the correction and the link - I went crazy yesterday trying to find that page !

Found some references to other brands that use rice protein concentrate.  Haven't verified myself (other than Blue Buffalo):

"NUTRO - Natural Choice & Natural Care Adult CAT food (dry)
BLUE BUFFALO (in their top 10 ingredients for dog food they list rice protein
    concentrate at #7"

No way of knowing if these are the other customers of the same supplier.
