Drop it doesn't always work, why?

Every time my dog and I play at home and i have treats in my hand (he sees them), he will bring the ball back and drop it, but as soon as i try the same game without the treats, he wouldn't let go of the ball. What should i do? I really want him to teach drop it, because everytime he go outside, he will pick up something gross and won't let go. Thanks.

You need to practice drop it without him realizing you've got treats. It needs to be a surprise - hey, I drop it, and sometimes I get a treat!

Start out by treating every time.
Work to the point where you treat sporadically.
If the dog sees you go the cupboard, get the treat bag, etc, he knows it's time to perform. He will not give you the repeat performance if he doesn't see you get the treats out! Why would he?

You need to have treats in pocket without him knowing, so he can never be sure if he's getting one or not. This way you'll build a habit where he thinks to himself "if I drop it, there's a good chance I'll get a treat."

    Hope that makes sense.
