Presley is 10 MO now, she went to basic obedience class when we she was about 5 months old. I think it served more to socialize her then teach her obedience but since both my wife and I took her to class we were able to teach her the basics on our own time and by the end of class she was pretty good with sit and come. Now she knows sit, stay, leave it, come and paw.
The problem is her 'Come' is not reliable at all. If we are in the house it is perfect and if we are walking in the woods and she is off leash she is very good with stay and come as long is there is no other people or dogs around. I would say 90%-95% of the time she will stay or come the first time I give the command and the rest i have to say it a few times but she eventually does it.
The real problem is when I bring her to my best friend#%92s house that has a 5 YO golden named Georgia. Georgia pretty much has no recall at all - unless you#%92re holding a treat or something. When the too dogs are playing, they totally ignore us.
I want Presley to be reliable when off lead. We have a great, HUGE park with great trials and she is naturally good about not running to far ahead or too far behind but sometimes we will bump into other people and dogs and I want to be able to tell her to stay or come until I find out if they or the dog is friendly and THEN let her do her thing...
I have been trying to enforce/continue training while walking on the leash - this is another problem area, she just waits for me to tug the leash before she comes. She stops to smell something, I let her for a minute or two then say come, she doesn#%92t even acknowledge me, I tug a little, she walks to me. I say come while she is walking and good come when she gets there and give her a treat. Been doing this for about 1 week and half and its not getting better.
Ok, sorry for the long post! My point/question is: can I get some opinions on if I should take her to Basic 2? Redo Basic 1? Keep doing what I'm doing? Any tricks or helpful hints, etc?
