Training slow dogs?

I had it easy when Emma was in obedience class. It started at 6:30, so I just stuck her kibble in my pocket. She worked her fuzzy little butt off for that kibble.

Teenie is not nearly so easy. I have to switch treats frequently, and keep them yummy.

jennie, go to the dog recipe thread and check out the salmon supreme treats.  Easy to make and most dogs go gaga for them.

I can't use Marq's kibble as treats.  He doesn't eat regularly at all.  Sometimes he will eat the four needed cups per day, sometimes he won't eat at all, sometimes he will only eat 2-3 cups..  He's not a regular eater at all.

Tessa, don't give up. Dogs have to learn how to be operant, and they have to learn how to learn. Try some luring at first. Hold a piece of smelly food in your tightly closed fist and reward the dog for interacting with your hand in order to get the food. Once the dog gets the idea- touch food-filled hand with nose in order to get the food, and your hand smells really food-like, try offering the empty closed fist. If dog touches the hand, oh joy, feed from the other hand.  Now try holding the target in your hand, and see if the dog is more willing to try touching it.
