    How often do you......

train with your dog? I am talking about Sit, Stays, Down, etc..
Are you supposed to do it everyday? I take my puppy Molly to a training class once a week and we practice her commands everyday for about 30 minutes. Well the class is almost over and I am wondering how often do we continue the training. Daily? (she is 9 months old by the way)

i have done no training at all with ernie since he was about 4 or 5 months old...

as things come up, i indicate my feelings about it...once you get past sit, off, no, machen pishe, come...the rest seems extra...

I do a few short mini sessions through out the day.  Always end on a good note.

I do the same as Jodi, except I have also recently added 45-60 minutes of interspersing training sessions with practicing loose-leash walking.  And then we have "zoomie-time" around a big grassy field and go home.

I only do "formal" training maybe once a week or so. This includes a set time where we'll practice all/most of the commands she knows.

Other than this though, I ask her to sit/lie down/stay/come many times throughout the day, every day, in my normal daily life. Sometimes she gets treats for it, sometimes not. I also ask her to close/open doors for me, or go to her bed, or to her kennel... she doesn't usually get treats for these things, as she really wants to do them (usually!)

We also do a few short sessions throughout the day (5-10 minutes). I have a clicker hanging on the refrigerator...when Lucy sees me reach for it...she knows it's time for cheese, I mean...training. Even though it seems like things move slowly from session to session, the difference from week to week and especially month to month is huge!

I do one good half hour training session a day.  I spend about thirty minutes and I really push the dogs hard.

Normally it involves a lot of fetch and sits, downs, stays, stands, comes, leave its, settle, etc...in between the fetching.

If I have anything treat wise, or human food extras, the dogs are always asked to do something for it. Sit, lay down, stand up, etc. And they always get goodies, so we're always working on things. Before they go out the door to go potty, they have to sit and stay, then I will give them a "go ahead" and they head out the door.

Before getting their leashes on, getting in the car, getting or doing anything, they are asked to do something.

Poor dogs, i'm running a doggie bootcamp I guess, lol

I don't look at training as something you do as much as it's a relationship or a way of living with my dog. Dogs are always being trained. I prefer to weave obedience stuff into the rest of life and practice a little bit all the time.

For installing a new thing, once a day for five minutes.

I guess I just assumed we were talking about installing new things since 90% of what I'm teaching now is for the purpose of getting through life.

With my new dog, Marq, I train with him just about everyday.  We practice his obedience all the time.  Sometimes I actually set a time to practice, other times it is just random. Right now I am working on teaching him attention and targeting(for agility).  [:D]

I don't usually do a set time. I expect things throughout the day, and will ask throughout the day. I'd guess about every other night I will grab a handful a of treats and work for a few minutes, possibly teaching something new. Some nights i'll try to teach Max something new, or free shape, particularly if I am sick, really tired, or it has been really cold out that day. Basically something to use up his energy if we didn't get out as much as we needed to.

Some days, one dog or the other needs a little extra attention. I'll crate the other dog with a bone and a meal, and take the attention needer outside, with her dinner in my pocket. We do off leash heeling, sits, stays, downs, overs (low low jumps or a hoola hoop), recall, etc, depending on what they know. This lasts 30-45 minutes. They also get random drills throughout the day, for a minute or less. With a puppy, of course, I'd do more. With Teenie, I should do more, but she's slow and she frustrates me. I have to stop before I start getting short and snappy with her, so she doesn't think I'm mad at her.

With multiple dogs, and I do mean MULTIPLE, it's tough to have specific training sessions.  I too ask for things throughout the day.  Above and beyond the basics, I'll bring just one dog at a time upstairs or outside and work with them for maybe 10 minutes max

I also just implement training into everyday situations.

Max's mom, darn it...your name isn't on your post anywhere, and I can't remember it. :(  But anyway....I love your icon. [8D]
