    Keeping The Dog Fit

There is a link to a website that describes the basic dog training to keep it in good shape:

Do you agree with what you have read here?

I agree with just about all i read. They seem to have covered all the bases pretty well. Each breed of dog has its own needs when it comes to a fitness regimine.

My female husky loves to run and pull me around on my bike, via a Springer bike attatchment.we run all year around up here in upper N.Y.S.,with winter bieng no exception. In the summer we run at night,on a bike path with my bike having both head and tail lights.on average we will run up to 10 to 15 miles every other day,and when she doesnt get her run,she gets a bit ornery..lol

I also used to have Golden retrievers, and swimming was our favorite thing to do.I alos taught them to soft mouth for duck season..

as for the fighting dogs,i hope they mean something more in the line of wrestling between 2 dogs that are on friendly terms. It almost  sounded like they we saying it was ok to bring 2 strange dogs together and let them fight"under supervision"

I don't agree with the last one, fighting. No way. That won't keep a dog fit, that will keep him injured, and possibly get him killed.

I agree with what is written there as well. MhadDog, I am very surprised by your female Husky who is able to run so many kilemeters every other day. Good condition.

I don't think he means "fighting" literally.  It seems as if this is a translated page.  I'm thinking that he meant "wrestling."  And this will wear out a dog more quickly than running, as they have to use more muscles in different ways.  Some owners don't like their dogs to wrestle because of the baring of teeth and how the dogs look when they're wrestling.  I even had one guy try to pull apart Xerxes and his friend Eva (a rottie mix) when they were wrestling.  He thought they were hurting each other for real.  (No this wasn't Eva's human)  The funny thing is he wrestles with very little or no noise.  When it gets noisy, I get concerned.

I agree as well.  They seem to have covered all the bases on the different ways to excercise your dog.  I would love to see Dasher trying to pick up one of those logs the Rottie was holding! [;)] I think when they talk about "fighting" they mean playing/wrestling.

    Hey there Pavel,

Kiara is an Alaskan Husky who we rescued from bieng put down the next day.

she is gorgeous, and that was part of her problem. She was adapted out 3 times and brought back due to her "huskiness"and seperation anxiety..she was about 1.5 years old when we got her.

Anyway,we knew what we were getting into when we got her,and shortly after i got a Springer bike attatchment...i started her off at 2 miles and progressed to 10 miles over the next 1 and 1 half years...

we start by playing in the back yard...then she gets her paws checked, followed by stretching and a
quick massage.then we run.She pulls like crazy for the first 1/4 mile and i then set her pace with vocal commands..on warmer days,we cut back on the miles, and in the winter i need to reign her in a bit,as she will try to go go go all day.

Now my W.D.(Kovu)on the other hand won't pull at all and will lope next to me the whole time, and the most we will do is 5 miles maximum.

i will post pics of my dogs and formally introduce myself when i find this area of the forum...nice to meet you all btw..lol

I believe some people are trying to refocus the pit breeds as weight-pulling dogs?  I'm woefully ignorant and may be wrong but if it's true I think that's awesome, personally.

Thank you for your comments, nice to meet you all. You seem to be experts on dogs.

Ok, I hope it meant playing. It that's what it is, i'm all for it. I like Max to play, because it tires him out much better than just walking.

It meant play fighting in puppies and fitness fighting in adults like it is described here:

OK--now I disagree.  Real fighting (that's what it is, no matter what you call it) is NEVER something that should be encouraged.  Actually, I have no idea where this site is based out of, but if it is an American or Canadian site you are BREAKING THE LAW.

Everytime a dog fights the behavior is being reinforced.  This is how you create dangorous dogs.

Many of the infamous "dogmen" did not allow the pits they fought to kill each other either.  That didn't make it right, and that doesn't make it OK in this instance.

Actually, I think the site is also breaking forum rules as it is PROMOTING dog fighting.  The people participating in this are no better than common dirty dog fighters.

I hope Jamie finds this and removes it.

I concur with sillysally. A real dogfight is a real dogfight.

Wolves don't need to constantly fight to "feel" whole, neither does my dog.
    • Gold Top Dog
That site is horrendous.  That sort of stuff should NOT be posted here.

Yes, you are right. I am against real dog fighting and I am trying to suppress it. Here is a real dog fighting:

And here is a closing explanation of this subject:

As we know, hard drugs are banned, but normal light cigarettes are allowed. Would you sentence a light normal cigarettes smoker as well as smoker of heavy banned drugs? Would you judge professional dog fighters in the same way as the owner of two young half-adult dogs (still almost puppies) that snapped after each other several times?

Please understand the GREAT DIFFERENCE between real dog fighting and fitness or play fighting or wrestling.

And there is one more thing. Dogs have to keep some healthy dominance tendencies and if they won't be allowed to display them, they would degenerate. That is why play and fitness fighting, and temperament tests...
