Memorial Day Carolina State Sheepdog Championship

Cross your fingers for Laura (itsadogslyf, er, I think) as she takes her maiden voyage around the novice course Monday afternoon with Miss June!  I'll be there for moral support and I'll post piccies here Monday night if the ol' computer cooperates.  It looks like great weather so I might even get a decent video to post.  That would be fun.

Everybody have a great weekend wherever you are, and whatever you are doing with your dogs!

Well, everyone survived and it was a great weekend.  My pupper's relatives all did us proud - her half sisters both made  respectable debuts in their seperate classes, and grandma Zip went to the Championship round and finished third overall - woo hoo!

Here's what an International Shed looks like - it's an exercise in the Championship round of big trials.  The object is to sort 20 sheep until only five sheep with collars remain inside a circle marked out with sawdust.  If more than two sheep with a collar leave the circle you have to regather and start over!  You can't touch the sheep and neither can your dog, and all the sheep will remain on the field until the last uncollared sheep leaves the circle.  you don't get help from pens, gates, sorting equipment, or fences - it's just you and your dog in the middle of a fied with twenty sheep, just like this:

    Catch that collared sheep!

It was in the nineties and they were allowed about 25 minutes for the whole course, including water breaks (water breaks are usually not allowed in BC trials, but the judge made a wise exception this weekend!

"I'm sitting here because you MADE me!"

A friend completing the ProNovice course (note sheep in upper right):

    "Ready . . .steady . . ."

    "GO!"

    Here they are, Dad!

Penning - you aren't allowed to let go of the pen gate rope once you've touched it, so Tony's dog has to get around to stop those sheep herself:

Laura from this forum, and her June - their first trial:

At the post, the big moment:

Don't worry, Mom, I've got it all under control!

    Come by, June!

June reaches the sheep almost perfectly and Laura breathes a sigh of relief - too soon as it turns out, but I didn't catch any of that "on film".  Laura can fill in anyone who might be curious.  I'm just the picture-taker.  [:)]

June is happy with her run and Laura will be happy a few minutes later when she recovers!
