Solid Gold Barking at the Moon

I read from another forum that Solid Gold was changing its formula. On the SG website, I noticed that turkey has been replaced by beef in the ingredient list.

Is this a recent change? Anyone know whether they are adding another product to this line that does not include beef?

I don't know about the formula change.  I still have the actual bag I bought 3 weeks ago and it says turkey.   I don't think I'm going to worry about it because Baily does well on beef.  Heading for the website though...thanks.

Well, here's all I can find on it

Barking at the Moon Formula Change

Solid Gold has made exciting new changes to Barking at the Moon.

We replaced turkey with beef to maintain the high protein content. Beef has an excellent amino acid profile, is highly digestible, and extremely palatable for dogs.

Barking at the Moon now contains salmon oil and taurine!

Salmon Oil is an excellent source of DHA, an Omega 3 fatty acid important for brain and central nervous development. DHA also helps support proper retinal function.

Taurine is an amino acid essential for heart health.

We also added healthy new oils such as almond oil, canola oil, and sesame oil.

It is a great change (I think), but I wonder why they didn't come out w/ a new formula like Innova (probably would have been to their benefit) to have two grain-free options?

The only reason my pup wouldn't eat SG BATM was because it had fish in it....he won't touch anything that smells fish (let's just hope he never develops allergies! lol)

I wanted to add something b/c I thought it was a bit peculiar.....Chicken Soup just recently changed their formulation by taking out the Turkey....so did Solid Gold.....both made in Diamond plants....coincidence?
    • Gold Top Dog
I wonder if the Diamond formulas have eliminated turkey recently??
    • Gold Top Dog
Actually, didn't Chicken Soup just eliminate turkey?

ETA: They removed turkey meal, but it still has turkey.

Hmmmm, the old version's ingredients look better to me. In the old version, there were 4 meat sources in the first 5 ingredients. Now there are only 2..... Also, in the new version, potatoes are the third AND fourth ingredient. The pumpkin meal, almond oil and sesame oil do seem good....

Really there are such huge differences, IMO it's not a different version of the same food, it's a DIFFERENT food. It's seems like maybe they should offer them both as separate varieties...

Yeah, instead of using potatoes, they are just using the potato protein which means a majority of that protein (of the 42%) is vegetable protein.  I wonder what led them to change this?  Maybe they have a decent explanation?

Another food Ben can eat - and it's a "winter" food (we alternate beef/lamb in winter and fish/duck in summer)!

Now, hmm, got to find somewhere that sells it so I can try it out and make sure.  Sometimes Ben reacts to a food when it's not obvious why in the ingredient profile.

I need a little education here...if the first two ingredients are salmon meal and beef...why would that mean that the majority of the 42% protein comes from the potato protein?

I thought Ben couldn't have tomatoes?

Sadly enough, Emma loves the old formula, but cannot have the new one. Too much red meat.

Tomatoes are one of the borderline triggers.  He can have them but not anything else too!  I couldn't feed this during hayfever season, for instance, and I couldn't feed it while he was under any kind of stress (during lambing, or shearing).

Since we've IDd the chicken sensitivity and the hypthyroidism, a lot of the foods I thought were Really Bad have turned out to be less of a problem.  I caught him eating sheep feed (corn, soy, wheat!) the other day and he only got a little itchy/scratchy!

Poor Emma - she and Ben are like Jack Sprat and His Wife.

I think it's a great change.  As far as marketing goes anyways.  Innova Evo is chicken.  They had to be different to compete.  Now dogs allergic to chicken such as mine can eat a grain free kibble.  Smart marketing decision.

But there wasn't chicken in the old Barking at the Moon formula either....
