What do you think of Nutro Natural Choice?

Hello. I've been reading posts about food allergies. What does everyone think on Nutro Natural Choice. I bought the dry Lamb Meal and Rice. Bogey's just itching and scrating so terribly much that she's miserable. While reading these boards I realized that what I was feeding her (Beneful) was lots of chicken and wheat and soy all of which she shouldn't have if she's got food allergies.  Have any of you had success with this?  I'm starting her on it tomorrow morning.

    Ingredients

Lamb Meal, Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of natural Vitamin E), Natural Flavors, Rice Gluten, Dried Egg Product, Dried Beet Pulp, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Dried Kelp (source of Iodine), Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acidhttp://www.nutroproducts.com/ncdoglamb.asp

Some people have good results with it. I personally won't feed it because of the soybean oil, "poultry" fat, and menadione. Here's some information on menadione:http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione Nutro also has more grains than a lot of similar products.

It's about the only food made by a major ( non-holistic) company that doesn't have chicken; even Eukanuba Natural Lamb has chicken flavor added and Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach has animal digest, which has internal organs from chicken. I hope it helps Bogey. Sensible Choice made by Royal Canin has a Lamb and Rice formula that doesn't have any chicken and has more protein and less grain than Nutro Natural Choice. The store where you're getting the Nutro may carry it; PetsMart does, so you may want to take a look at it too.

Anyone who reads this forum knows that there are so many better foods available than Nutro Natural Choice. Innova, Eagle Pack, Canidae are just a few of the better brands.
It is my opinion however, that a varied diet which can include kibble, should only be one component and that a combination of raw, raw frozen, and quality canned foods can make a tremendous difference in a dog's health.

I get Sensible Choice at Petco, my Petsmart doesn't carry it.

Mitch, we're going for kinder, gentler nutrition postings here.

I do think that there are better overall choices than Nutro and you can generally get them at the same places at comparable prices.

Best of luck finding something that works for Bogey. My grandpa had a brittany when I was growing up, she was such a sweetie. He fought skin problems and hot spots with her for her entire life. She was on meds all the time. I don't think he knew about allergy foods or anything at that time, now I wonder if we could have done better for her. [:(]

Besides the "poultry" fat and menadione, I also don't like the rice flour and rice gluten. I think that dogs can benefit from some grains, but I doubt the highly processed versions like flour and gluten have much nutritional value.

I would personally go with California Natural Lamb and Rice. The only two ingredients (besides vitamins and sunflower oil) are lamb and rice. Here's a link to product information.

If you're looking for a food that you can get at Petco, I would recommend Natural Balance.

From Petsmart, I think the best food they have is Blue Buffalo, but it probably has too many ingredients for a dog with allergies. A lot of people have had good results with Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach, although reading the ingredients list kind of makes me cringe.

If it works, feed it, if it doesn't, dont. If you find something that works, stick with it, regardless of what anyone here, myself included, says.

Ron is right. You already bought it, use it and see how it works for your dog. If it doesn't venture on to another,, perhaps some of the choices mentioned above.
    Good luck!

I agree with Ron also. If it works for Bogey, go with it.  Sure there are foods that some people consider "better" but if it works for your dog, there's no reason to switch around just because someone else thinks it's better or worse, you know?

I did a lot of switchign around to the high end holistic foods and had some trouble with each of my dogs on each of them. Innova is one we can't even touch and it is a big favorite on the boards here.  We settled with PetGuard, which is technically holistic, but much simpler than most of the other holistic type foods.  I've been sticking with this one now for almost 2 months (fed it for a solid 6 last year before I felt pressured to go to Innova again) and teh dogs are doing great in all aspects. It works for them and I'm not going to go messing around on them.

Nutro is a good food. Far better than what Bogey was eating before and I'm betting you'll see improvements in him.  I know several people who swear by it.
You can get a little notebook and keep a journal of foods you feed, date started/ended and results you see (good and bad).  This will help you determine which foods to feed and which to avoid. Some people like to rotate foods a few times a year and this will help you find good foods for your rotation, if that's what you want to do.

Otherwise, don't let people pressure you too much until you see the results in your own dog.

No one is trying to pressure you into anything. I do apologize if it seems that way. No one on this board at any time should feel like they have to defend what they are feeding. I will not ever fault anyone for making the decisions they make for their pets as long as they are informed decisions. We are answering the question "What do you think of Nutro Natural Choice?" with our own opinions and knowledge. Knowing the good and the bad, and possibly learning something new from someone else allows you to make the best and most informed decision for your situation.

I had a foster dog here for 6 months who had a very sensitive tummy.  The only food he could eat and be well on was the Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice, small bites.  He did really well on it and thrived.  Remember to change your dog's diet very slowly over the course fo 7 days, add a bit of the new food to the old food, increasing the amount a little each day.  If it makes your dog feel better and relieves the problems you're seeing, then it's the right food for him.

There is chicken in the animal digest in Pro Plan; I was considering feeding it to Jessie when I learned she's allergic to chicken but I asked the company about the animal digest first. The only foods at PetsMart that have absolutely no chicken are Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice and Natural Choice Lamb and Rice, and perhaps Max Dog Beef and Rice of the better brands.
I was only trying to be helpful by mentioning Sensible Choice Lamb and Rice; Nutro Natural Choice is a good food.

I have 7 (7!) Petsmarts within a very reasonable driving distance, and slowly but surely there seems to be a Petco popping up across the street from most of them. Overkill? I think so.

The Blue Buffalo Lamb does look good and they're removing the menadione. By Sept 2006 the bags should reflect the change.
