    What do you think??

Last night, I was at the pet store near me that sells all the holistic foods you can think of.  I was next to a couple and this is what I heard as they were looking at Canidea Snap Biscuits--

husband--we should get him some of these
wife--looks at ingredients (I was impressed, never see anyone but me doing that), reads them aloud and says, but it's too much, it's supposed to be a treat not a meal
husband--well, that's why you're supposed to break them

I did not know how to take that conversation.  "It's too much, . . ." it sounded to me like she thought the ingredient quality was too high for a snack.

I thought he was thinking calories.

What do you all think and have you ever thought that the ingredients in a snack were too "good"??

    Very interesting!
Too much,,,hhhmmm,,,my first thought was TOO MUCH MONEY!
How could one think that the ingredients are too good? Gee.  I know we think of snacks as junk food, but why not give our dogs good snacks?   I do buy Canidea snacks occasionally and EP bisquits. I won't used any of the ones that are in the grocery stores, or that have BHA or BHT in them. Ollie used to LOVE Scooby Doo Snacks the best,,,but geez when I read the ingredients of them I stopped buying them.
I would NEVER think the ingredients in a dog snack as being too good, thats for sure.

That's how I read it too, Lori.  Like she thought it was too calorie dense to give the dog a whole *whatever* and then her husband told her that they were supposed to be broken up.  It made me think of those training treats that come all joined together, but you have to break them in smaller pieces - you wouldn't just give the dog a huge chunk that was actually 10 or 12 *pieces*.

True, maybe the too much did mean too expensive for a snack.

I think a treat is a treat.  I avoid BHT/BHA, but otherwise I don't critisize someone for buying a cheap biscuit.  My little guy is allergic to wheat, so usually his biscuits are more expensive than say "Milk Bones," but if he wasn't I would.  Except for their soft treats "Milk Bones" biscuits are BHA/BHT free.

When I used to work for a pet supplies store, a pet food demonstrator (brand name disclosed) scolded me for giving a customer's dog a sample of some cheap biscuit.  The dog liked it and the customer bought it.  It contained by-products, but no BHT/BHA or food colorings.  My response was "It's a treat, not food."  Mind you the food demonstrator was drinking a diet pepsi.

Willow likes the small plain Milk Bones.  I get them for her.  I think it depends on how many treats a day or week they get.  She's not a big treat dog so she might get a couple a week if that.  I mean once in awhile maybe more but rarely.  So, for her that brand works.  But, if she was getting a treat for every little thing she did like some of the dogs I sit for then I think I'd want it to be something good for her too.

But, your right about the Milk Bones, all the plain have no BHT or any of that.  I was surprised.

Sally loves the Canidea biscits!  She'll eat just about any treat, but with a wheat allergy, we are limited on what we can give her.  The last time we got them for her they were mostly her "crate treats" but we did use them a bit for training in a pinch, and she never gained weight on them.

Bubblegum gets a bisquit everytime she comes in from outside...not sure how that started. It used to be when she went out to be a "good girl!"   I guess she thinks she is a good girl every time she goes out and comes back in now,,,,whether she was a "good girl" or out for a walk or playing....but she also is a chow hound...so no matter what I give her for a snack I break it up..she gets  quite a few. I do get her Eagle snacks and the last time I bought her Nutro Natural Choice Chops,,,and break them up too.  Ollies favorite used to be Scooby Doos Snacks,,,but then I read the ingredient list from them,,,,,,,YIKES!

I eyeballed those new Milk Bone Selects when they came out. They actually don't look too bad, at all. Of course, I can't use them, but barring a freak of a dog, I don't see why  you couldn't.

I was thinking the size of the Canidae snaps was too much. Those things are HUGE! I'd have to bash them with a hammer..... I don't like giving treats bigger than my pinky nail.

What I thought from reading it was that she was thinking it was too much stuff in them... like a long list of ingredients and was too much for a treat...?[&:]  Like a treat should just be a couple things involved or its more like a "meal" that a treat.  I dunno tho, lol.
