Changed Food

Just remember it can take up to 6-8 weeks to truly know how a dog is doing on a food.

What she's describing is bile, and that happens when the tummy is empty.  So I think she should *try* increasing the frequency of the meals first.  I don't think that their is an obstruction or she wouldn't be seeing any poop.

I suspect that she did a cold switch from the pedigree to purina and that might have caused the tummy upset that caused the vomiting.

I'm gonna try to explain the poop/empty stomach thing a bit better......lets see the tummy as a parking lot and the intenstinal track as the roads leading out of the parking lot.  After the mall closes, or the ballgame lets out, the parking lot empties out pretty quickly and the roads get full until the cars can pass out of the area.  So the empty parking lot can be totally empty and still have the cars that WERE in it, passing out to the surrounding areas.  That's sort of the way that the tummy and pooping work...the stomach digests and passes the food along to the intestinal tract for further processing or whatever it does.....before it comes out the other end.  But that can take HOURS (think about trying to leave after a ball game...you often think you might as well still be sitting in the parking lot)...and in the meantime, the tummy is ultra empty and making all kinds of acid that can cause the bile toss up.

Thank you for the lesson, Glenda[:D].  I learned something new to day!

Thank you for all of the suggestions. That is a problem, he has a sensitive stomach to begin with. I have tried higher quality foods, but he ended up having diarrhea with them. Also, what is the best quality I can get at the grocery store? IAMS? He did not start vomitting until I switched his food initially, therefore, I think it has something to do with that, and less to do with the quality of food he is receiving. I will feed him three times a day and see if that helps, by the way, he is a lab/cur dog mix.

Yes, I think I would try more frequent meals, and see if that helps.I have recently started to feed my two, smaller serving meals three or four times a day, spaced out throughout the day.
If that does not help,it might be necessary for blood work to be done, and check the enzyme levels. You might also try a good enzyme supplement, there are some good ones out there.
    Take Care.

You could feed Iams, but it's not worth the exorbitant prices they charge.

And you'll hear stories of the "Iams cruelty" from members on the board.  I've seen the videos/pictures and heard P&G's side of it.  I won't state my opinion on the matter, unless someone wants to PM me for it, because it'll start a load of crap.

Well, I picked up his food for the night, so when I get up in the morning, after I take him out, I will put his food down and start him on a new schedule in the morning.

What brands have you tried? Iams is not considered a high quality food,by the way.

You have to feed far less of the true high quality foods than you would on purina etc.High quality foods such as timberwolf organics, innova,Wysong,Natural Balance,Natures variety etc are far more concentrated and pack a bigger nutritional punch per cup than the cheap foods, therefore you have to feed less.Overfeeding of these foods usually cause diarrhea.Alot of owners think they have to feed the same amount of the better foods as they did with inferior ones, this is always a recipe for disaster [&:]

Well, I tried a brand that was carried at my local feed store (which is all I have besides a grocery store in my town--my options are limited). I don't remember the name. We also tried Diamond--that was a disaster. I'm going to stick with what he was eating before but keep him on a strict diet until he gets better, there were no problems with it, he was eating it for 6 months before I had this brilliant idea to change his food! [:(]

I think you're doing the right thing and I hope he gets back to normal soon. By the way, pumpkin is supposed to help firm the stool when a dog has diarrhea.

Edie, This may explain why dogs with a sensitive digestive system have problems with foods like Canidae and Innova;               [linkhttp://www.royalcanin.us/faq.html#6]http://www.royalcanin.us/faq.html#6[/link]

I have a Labrador and I'm thinking of swithching from Iams to your product, but I don't understand why your Daily Allowance Recommendation is about 7 cups and theirs is 3 cups? Since your product already costs slightly more this would increase our costs by 2x and with Labradors this doesn't seem to make sense to me.
The answer comes down to 2 factors. The first and most important factor is product density. Our product is much less dense than the other brands. By density, I am actually referring to two things. The first is actual product density and the second is caloric density. Our entire product range is at least 25% less dense than competitors. Why? Decreased density increases both palatability and digestibility.

Royal Canin says that foods that are less dense are more digestible so that may explain why some dogs have problems with the high end foods.

I honestly believe in sticking with what works.

However, if in the future you did want to add in new and "better" foods, I would like to suggest Wysong's canned Beef Au Jus or even the Turkey Au Jus.  They both contain 95% meat and also animal plasma which I've been doing a lot of reading on.  It helps digestion tremendously and it must be so because Willow has been eating like a horse which we haven't seen in the three years we've had her.  And, while she's still on her supplements and special food I can add this in with no trouble like diarrhea at all.  The other brand I've been having good luck with is Evanger's Hunk of Beef.

    Good luck.

My pup has thrown up the last two days and we just changed his food as well.  He has had a high urine ph problem, so we switched from Wellness Puppy to Eagle Pack Chicken and Rice, which has a lower target ph.  Anyways, his poops have firmed up and he seems to like the taste of the food, but it seems like it might be harder for him to digest.  We are going to keep him on it for a few days to see if it just takes a while for him to get used to.  We slowly switched him onto it (over the course of ten days) and this is the first couple of days he is 100% Eagle Pack.  I'm hoping it just takes a week or so to get used to as finding a puppy food with a low target ph was a task in itself.

Jada, If all you have option for is at the grocery store...you could try Purina One, it has yogurt in it to help tummys.  My Shih Tzu is doing very well on it.  There are different flavors, I currently feed the chicken one.  A lot of people here can get the premium brands where they live but if you can't I think that Purina One works well, atleast for my dog.
