    Changed Food

I am new to the forums, and I wanted some advice on my dog. I changed his food because I'm a novice dog owner and decided he might want something new. I changed it from Pedigree regular dog food, to Purina Dog Chow (primarily because of their advertisement on TV--GRRRR). Unfortunately, my dog started vomitting the Dog chow up, so I took that back and got his original dog food. Well, he's been back on his original dog food for a week now, but he's still throwing up. His poop is fine, he poops 1-2 times a day. What do you think is causing this continous throwing up? He throws up every other day, and usually it's just mucus yellow liquid. Please help!!

Food aside, it sounds like your guy is throwing up bile because of an empty stomach. How old is your dog? Puppies need to be fed several small meals through the day, adults usually 2 or maybe 3 times a day. This is particularly important for small breeds.

My dog is 14 months old now, and he didn't start throwing up until I switched his food, so I'm very upset with myself! But, he's pooping fine, so how can he have an empty stomach? I see him eat 2 times a day at least. This morning for instance, he threw up which prompted me to get online and figure something out, but he also went poop.

Also, throwing up can cause dehydration.  Make sure your pup stays hydrated, lots of water.

Kelly is absolutely correct.  This does sound like bile and I suspect it's simply because he isn't being fed frequently enough.

You can find some great information about good quality dog foods at ....help me out Kelly, I can't remember mordannas new website??  It was [linkhttp://www.mordanna.com/dogfood]www.mordanna.com/dogfood[/link]....... and you can probably link to the new addy from there.

Basically, what you are feeding this pup is nothing but corn and grains and dogs NEED meat.

Changing foods can cause digestive problems, but you also need to keep an eye out for pancreatitis.
I agree that pedigree and many others like it are not the best.
You might try some lean gr.beef and rice or sub.chicken for the beef,in small amounts to start.

I just wanted to make a comment on him throwing up the bile.

My dog (1 1/2) gets fed three times a day, but he still throws up a lot.  (his nickname is Duker the Puker)  Sometimes its bile sometimes it has food in it.  Sometimes we will go a week with him throwing up once or twice a day, other times we will go a couple of weeks with no throwing up.  I have taken him to a couple of different vets to see if there is something wrong.  All of them say that it is kinda weird, but he is really healthy.

If he continues to throw up, and you are sure that he is eating enough, than I would suggest taking him to the vet just to make sure that there is nothing else wrong.

    Good Luck!

Monitor him and if need be take him to the vet.  I know a lot of people on here feed high end food and their dogs do well with it.  I tried that with Harley and he does great on Purina one.  Most would say that the food I feed is garbage, but he doesn't process the other foods well.  I am sticking with what works, no itchies and allergies and poops fine.

Willow will vomit bile if she goes more than 9 hours or so without food.  So, I've been giving her 3 meals a day instead of 2 and she's not having the problem anymore.  It could be that your are feeding enough times but not spacing them out enough.

Edited to say--If your dog is doing this you really should figure out a solution.  Willow's vet told me that over time damage can be caused by vomiting bile every day.  I'd try spacing the meals out more.

Are you giving RAWHIDE? If so, stop.  Rawhide can get lodged in your dog's digestive tract.  Take your baby to the vet ASAP to see if there is something lodged - it could even be a sock.  Pancreatitis and diabetes is something you should have your vet check for too.

Also, Pedigree and dog chow are not great foods.  Please check out the website others have given you.

Its true Purina and Pedigree products are not the best but if they work they work.  If the dog cannot digest higher quality foods then go to what works.  THe best food in the world is no good if your dog gets diarhea and vomiting from it.  I say use what works.  A lot of dogs cannot process the higher quality foods and a lot cannot digest the lower grade foods either find out what works and stick with it.

Firestorm, the OP hasn't tried anything BUT purina or pedigree so she can't make that determination based on what she has tried.

Poop exits lower down in the system....so just because the dog is pooping doesn't mean that his TUMMY isn't empty....

Glenda, then the best bet for her would be to take the dog to the vet.?  If I were her I would by smaller bags of better dog food and try them and see.
