    Raw eggs

We give our 4 month old German shepard 2 eggs a week, my question is, is this ok to give him. Please advise, thank you so much.

My family has always mixed raw eggs in with our dogs food.I dont for Rory because her tummy is to sensitive but may I ask why two eggs?

I give my JRT one egg every night.

Raw foods are very healthy for dogs, and eggs are a great source of easily digested protein, and many vitamins.

My 3 get a raw egg on their food every morning.

I give a raw egg (shell and all) to each dog several times a week. They love it, and I find it very entertaining. ;)

Ok, I don't want to offend anyone but I strongly dissagree with giving raw eggs. I've seen the effets of it and I would never give raw eggs to my dog.

Raw eggs have a protein called avidin in them that cause an imunity to protein. So what happens is the dogs body rejects protein and the dog forms a protien defiencity. Same thing can happen in humans and any mamal that eats raw eggs.

I would much rather give a supliment similar to bioten or feed cooked eggs. When cooked it breaks down the avidin and makes it safe to consume.

My understanding Xebby has been that the yolks have far and enough biotin in them to surpass the binding effect of the avidin in the raw whites and enough to offset the effects of the avidin - providing plenty of available biotin. ;) I wouldn't give raw whites alone though!

I "THINK" avadin binds biotin and biotin binds protien.

Eating raw egg whites ONLY will cause you to have a lack of biotin due to the avadin therefore creating a protien deficiency.

The egg yolk is the most concentrated form of biotin found in nature and therefore provides more than enough to make up for the avadin in the white... and you will not see a protien deficiency.

I give whole raw eggs sometimes.  You just have to give the whole thing or supplement with biotin...

I guess I never thought about it that way, I'm still uneasy about feeding raw eggs. I'm ok with feeding almost everything else raw as long as it's done correctly.

...Or just feed over easy to be even safer...

Do you give the shells too? My favorite part is watching one of my dogs delicately chase it around her bowl, pick it up ever so carefully, and then.... "CRUNCH!!!!". [:D]

A fellow that sells supplements and natural products for dogs on the Internet, told me a couple of years ago that the 3 best things I could give my dog every day to keep him healthy is 1. Vit.C  2. a good oil  and 3.  a raw egg every day. Since then we have given Ollie (my sons Great Dane) and now Bubblegum a raw egg every morning on top of her kibble.
However,  just this past month or so, I came across an article on the Mercola website that made me change a little. Dr Mercola actually believes that raw eggs are very good for humans also, and has been advocating that on his website for some time.  But just recently he put a statement in his article to differ from this.   It is:
However, recently a subscriber, Dr. Sharma, PhD, who is a biochemist with Bayer, contacted me about this issue. His investigation into the matter revealed that there is not enough biotin in an egg yolk to bind to all the avidin present in the raw whites. He found that 5.7 grams of biotin are required to neutralize all the avidin found in the raw whites of an average-sized egg. There are only about 25 micrograms -- or 25 millionths of a gram -- of biotin in an average egg yolk.

So since then, I give Bubby a raw yolk every morning, and put MOST of the white in a container and when I get about 4 ot 5 whites saved I cook them with out seasoning or oil, and she gets cooked whites with the raw yolk every day. About once a week or so I just throw the whole raw egg in.   My son still give Ollie a raw whole egg though.  Many people say they have been doing this for years with no problem so I am probably wasting my time cooking the whites once a week. BUT I feel better about it anyway.
The thing about cooked eggs is that I read years ago that raw eggs do not cause allergies but cooked eggs do.

I give raw eggs 2-3 times a week, not yet have I given the shells though. I was told to do this as its good for thier coats as well by several breeders whom have given raw eggs to their dogs for years.

I meant to ask dogslyfe about shells.  I know that there are others that feel their dog the shell and all, and I tried it with Ollie years ago, and he turned his nose up at it,,,so I never tried giving Bubby the shell. She LOVES to eat everything,,so she would probably eat it...but I am thinking,,,,,,,,,don't they cut up the insides of their mouths on the shells???      Sorry if thats  stupid question.

Not a stupid question at all.  [;)]  Not that I can tell though- none of mine have appeared to have any cuts or scrapes.  My smaller dogs aren't interested in eating all of the shell (Zippy appears to want to bury his), so I usually give them only 1/2 - but the border collies munch it like crazy dogs.  Its kinda comical really.  My understanding is that their bodies will use whatever of the shell they need, and the rest you'll see in the poop - no biggie.

I will have to try it with Bubblegum one day when I am not working and have time to WATCH her eat her breakfast!  LOL!
