I am nervous!!!!!!!

Actually, I shouldn't get into this conversation,,,but since its brought up and there is already a little debat,,,,,,,
Chicken wings sound like they are really easy to choke on. I for one have a Dane,,how can I hold on to one end of it and have her chew on the other???
Are you talking both sections of chicken wings or just the little drumstick part?
Also, we eat (dh and I not Bubby) chicken wings all the time at the sports bar that we go to after golf a lot....we only like them when they are done really crispy because the skin is so yucky,,,,, so I'm thinking,,,,,,,,,isn't chicken wings with so much skin like that just not good for a dogs stomach?  Seems so rich and fattening and kind of sickening to me.
Seems like a chicken breast might be better for us then wings.

I was apprehensive and excited at the same time when I fed jake his first raw chicken.  I feed a chicken leg quarter to him as his meal once a week.  I cut the thigh portion into 2-3 pieces and I did hold the leg the first couple times.  It was hilarious the first time because he looked at me like " What the world is this?" But he has no problem now. My husband thought I was nuts too, but now he just thinks it cool. He likes to feed it to him himself now.  Jake also gets other raw bones and chicken livers as a treat sometimes.  He really didn't like the liver raw so I thru it in a pan and quickly seared (sp) the outside and he ate it that way. I geuss that was OK.  Just go for it. Post afterwards and tell us how you make out. Paula

Raw chicken bones are fine. My dog has been eating them for nearly 3 years, and my families dogs before that also ate them.

I give necks and breast bones I have not given wings though, only because I never think to get wings. He gets chicken bones atleast 3 times a week.

I probably wouldn't give a wing to a Dane.  That's an awfully small piece of meat for an awfully big dog.  [;)]

I usually start my dogs on wings, but then I have 25-30 lb dogs.  With them I give the WHOLE wing typically, but will occasionally go for part (like the 10 lb doggies get one section - like a drummette).  They don't seem to have any problems gulping them, but if they did I would hold one end.  They don't seem to have any problem with the fat, and the bone to meat ratio in a wing is almost perfectly balanced.  After they're doing OK on wings, I typically move my guys up to chicken quarters, or thighs and legs.  Because they are small they don't eat all that terribly much.

The ultimate way to go about it would be to hand one of them a whole animal, and let them eat on it for a few days.  I don't have that kind of room in my fridge, so necessity dictates that they get pieces.

If I was starting a much larger dog eating raw, I would hand them a leg/thigh quarter - bone in, skin on.

I actually give my dogs game hens. They LOVE them. They are small and half of one is a good meal. Everything is gone in minutes.

My dogs get a chicken wing or thigh or chopped up necks in their meal every single day, they so look forward to them,i could never take them away.

ak40 so many owners give raw chicken bones to their dogs every single day without incident, you should be just fine [:D] you know your dog best and how he chews, hard or soft, you'll both get the hang of it very soon,i'm sure. Just remember what dogs are designed to eat...raw meat AND bone,i just dont think one can go wrong feeding a 'species appropriate' diet.

I think much the same way but with different results.

Oh for goodness sakes, RAW chicken bones are FINE. Mine get them at least once a week.

[sm=rofl.gif] Glenda, you crack me up!

    As far as I know...cooked chicken bones=bad
    raw chicken bones=good

If dogs were in the wild...they might catch a bird to eat, right?

Ok, I am going to go to the grocery store today and buy some chicken wings for a snack for my dogs.  Please reassure, I am totally scared!!!!![&:]

Although I agree with raw feeding I would HIGHLY recommend that you become more comfortable about the idea before you actually do it.  If you are nervous or you feel that you are not equipped with the right amount of information, there is no reason for you to feel pushed to do it.  Be ready, get educated, make the decision because you believe it's the right thing to do.  Do some more reading, join an online group specifically for raw feeding.

I don't care how positive raw feeding may be, if the owner is not comfortable I would never recommend it.  You need to feel confident about what you are doing.

OK, so when I was going to the grocery store last night, my fiancee decided to join me.  When we got to the meat section, he absolutly freaked when I told him what I was doing.  He manages a hotel and has taken a bunch of classes about food preperation and started making a scene-he can be dramatic. Anyways, I am going to get them next time I am at the grocery store-most likely tomorrow.  I am so happy that everyone responded to my questions, thanks so much.  I swear that I will update, most likely tomorrow night, I was just so tired from work last night that I did not want to do anything.

Um chicken bones are not okay to give a dog. They are to small and are ones of the most hazardous bones for dogs to chew. What made you think to get chicken bones? Go to the butcher and get some big beef bones

That is incorrect.  UNCOOKED chicken bones are fine.  Zoe has them with no problem as do many many many many dogs!
    • Gold Top Dog
You said you have small dogs right.... if you are worried a wing is too small, then use a leg.  Zoe is 10 lbs and I give her a leg.

I give chicken wings, backs (are specially soft you can break apart w/hands) and other bones, always raw never cooked as this will make the bone hard and can easily splinter.

If your dog has never eaten bones before, exercise some safety precautions such as: holding the bone first for him to eat (in case they are gulpers and not chewers) watch like a hawk.  Mine has been eating all kinds of bones for 2 years and I have never had a problem,  but momma is always right there, I never give a bone and go to the movies. from my informal polls of raw feeders and intermittent raw bones for snacks feeders, raw chicken wings are probably one of the safest bones you can feed. For big dogs, chicken quarters or even whole chickens provide greater benefit to the teeth (swallowing a chicken wing whole doesn't do much tooth cleaning, although it is not dangerous in any way).
