    NOT a happy camper re:Evangers

A little while back, I emailed Evangers to enquire about their Duck and Sweet Potato canned food. I don't feed dog food often, but it looks good, and I wanted some from backup. I was very specific and direct about the fact that one of my dogs has life threatening allergies and CANNOT be exposed to foods that she is allergic to. They assured me that it was fine, and the ingredients on the label were absolutely correct.

I purchased TWO cases of the food. I've fed about three cans, in as many months. It seemed fine. The dogs like it, no GI upsets, no problem. I was happy. I opened a can tonight, and as I was spooning it out, I noticed lumps. It's usually a pate type consistency, so I dig out the lumps. TWO PEAS and some sort of GRAIN are in this can. I am so mad.... Neither peas, nor grains are listed on the ingredients.

I'm emailing them, now. I'll let you know what they have to say.

Oh that is not good at all. I would call them and let them know that their quality control, or whatever it is, is lacking and they need to make good on those two cases.
I have used their 100% meat formulas and not had a problem thankfully.
I would be very upset though if I saw this, as it doesn't take much of an offending food to cause an allergic reaction for many dogs.

Yeah, that doesn't sound good.  I also use their 100% meat varieties and haven't had any problems.

Oh, God.  Now, I'm concerned was that even the duck in there??  How are they doing??

I'm really interested in knowing how they respond to you.  I've been using the all meat beef, called Hunk Of Beef and have been really impressed with the quality and consistency.

    Hope everyone is OK.

I think you should call, I use the  Evangers canned drumetts and had read the ingredients, I have gone through at least 10 cans and the other day I opened a can and found a small carrot piece. The picture on the label shows the drumetts sitting on peas, carrots and pasta, I thought it was just for looks. Anyways I call and asked if the carrots were suppose to be in there and they said yes along with the peas and pasta. I told them I had never got any of that in the cans I bought, they said these cans are hand packed and that they would look into it, she apoligzed and they are sending  me free cans, So hopefully they will do they right thing by you, since your dog could of gotten sick by there mistake.

mmm supposed to have stuff its lacking... having things it shouldnt... I would be upset too!  Interested as to what they tell you.

Wow, that's scary.  It's so very important to me that the food  have exactly what is listed and no more (in particular some of the things Ben is highly allergic to).  I wonder whether they'd pay the vet bills if Ben ate some of this food that was supposed to be beef and there were some, say, venison in there?

I'll be interested to hear what they say.

grrrr--what is it with pet food companies these days?? They just can't seem to make a consistent product. I would be really mad if I found something different in my dog's food, especially since she has allergies (but they're not as severe as Emma's!)

I hope you get a more satisfactory answer than I did from a similar situation with a different company. This other company basically said a little can't hurt. A very inadequate answer IMHO.
I agree, what is it with these companies?!?!

Hope it works out for you and Emma.

I hate to disagree with the company, but a little CAN hurt if you are allergic to something....expecially a bad allergy.  A single peanut can kill someone with a severe allergy to them.  Just a little clam juice in a recipe can kill someone allergic to them, etc, etc.  That is very irresponisble for a company to say something like that5.

    What company said that???

I think a lot of these companies take the attitude that *well, it's just DOG food, after all, so what's the difference - dogs eat anything.* They lose sight of the fact that a dog can have allergies just like a person, and a *little bit* of the wrong thing can have disasterous results for the dog. It would be interesting to find out if the company could be held liable if a dog eats something that is not supposed to be in the can or not listed on the label.

    Good Morning Kelly,

Thanks for writing and we appreciate your concern. The other piece is from our Power Formula. When we transition from running one formula to the next, pieces of food can get stuck in the hopper that drops food into the bags. Even if you did have an allergy prone dog, the relatively few pieces of another formula would not cause a problem.
We do appreciate that you are feeding Eagle Pack.

ETA: I mentioned in that thread that I e-mailed him back - I never got a second response. Honestly, I was shocked - I've heard pretty much nothing but good things about their customer service.

Wow. That's a horrible response, Kelly. A few peices can certainly cause a problem, especially if the allergies are severe, at all.

They didn't get the food, last night, and they won't get any more til I get a response.

    Did you hear back?
