    Refusing Food? (Canidae)

Tux has been walking away from a full food dish over the past week or so.  He will eventually go back and eat it, but this morning he ate part of it then just walked away.

I've been feeding them homecooked and raw as well as Canidae.  Is this causing him to refuse?  The vet says there's nothing wrong and he will eat ANYTHING else but his bowl of kibble.

    Thanks so much!!

If the vet says the dog checks out ok, I wouldn't worry about it.  He won't starve.  Maybe he just doesn't like the Canidae?  Has he eaten it enthustically in the past?

     It's possible that he's becoming finicky because of the raw and homecooking. I also feed Jessie raw and homecooked and she will eat those first and then eat her kibble if they are fed together but she always eats her kibble. It sounds like you leave his food down for a while;
" He will eventually go back and eat it, but this morning he ate part of it then just walked away."
It may help if you took his bowl away after about ten minutes and didn't offer him anything until the next feeding; that's the way we've always done with Jessie. Jessie will eat anything anytime but if your dog is a more "dainty" eater and a significant portion of his diet is raw and homecooked he may not be hungry enough to eat his kibble. I hope you find the answer you're looking for; good luck.

Mine eat either raw or homecooked for dinner and kibble every morning.  Mine know that if they don't eat what they are given that they'll do without until the next meal time, so perhaps thats why it works for me.

When I first introduced Canidae to my pup, he ate it and asked for more.  Then he started to walk away from it just like your dog..  After a while he would come back and eat, but I wanted to keep him on a schedule so I'm trying to mix canned Canidae with the dry.  So far he is eating the canned first and then some of the dry. The only time he finishes the entire bowl is after he had some good excersize/playing wherein he works up a good appetite.
I have done a little research and found that Canidae probably doesn't smell or taste as good as other foods, partially due to no garlic in the ingredients.  But, it is a really good food and my pup does really well on it, so I will keep it in his rotation of foods.
I agree what other have suggested.  Perhaps he got picky with the homecooking/RAW.  I believe your dog will not starve and will eventually eat it.  You can try mixing canned Canidae, but I am sure he will eat it around the dry.  Good luck

Thanks!!  That's what I was thinking ... when he gets anything with his dry he eats it all no problem - so he's probably just getting picky.  I can't leave it down, I usually just encourage him to go eat -  because the other one will eat it and he can't have Canidae since it has chicken. *sigh*  I'll just take it up when he doesn't eat and give it to him next feeding.

We're going to switch to Eagle Pack Holistic (Fish) at the end of this bag since it's about time for a rotation ... so maybe that will help he LOVES fish...

Thanks so much for all your replies!! I really appreciate it!!

Glenda what would you do if one of your dogs refused their kibble in the morning, would they still get the raw/homecooked at their next meal,or would you offer the innova again?

Just talking hypothetical,as yes, i know there would be something seriously wrong if you're dogs wouldnt eat [:D]

For a while, Sally would leave some food in her dish.  I started leaving it down for 20 min and then taking it up.  After a week or so, she decided that it would be better to eat it all.

Boy, thats a good question!  Sheba once in awhile will decide not to eat breakfast.  I pick up the bowl and she gets her homecooked for dinner.  But, Sheba aside, that's just not something that happens here, and even with her its very rare.  And even with HER, missing  a meal warrants my keeping a very close eye on her.  My dogs just flat out always eat.  If you truely have a picky eater, there might be some merit to offering the same old stuff that was refused tho....I'm not sure what I'd do with a truely PICKY eater....I've never had one.

Ollie my sons Great Dane ate about 2 large bags of Canidea,,,and then stopped eating it altogether. We switched him to Eagle Pack and he started eating it and never looked back!  He gets cooked meat ontop of his Eagle for dinner and raw egg on top for breakfast.

I feed the EP fish and all 3 bowls are gone in 20 minutes. When I fed the EP lamb, 2 would eat a bit and then graze the rest of the day, but since the switch everyone cleans their dish. Maybe because it has a strong fishy smell.

Exactly!  He used to wolf it down - and he would pick out the Canidae kibbles from whatever it was we were switching from when I first transitioned over ... He used to really like it but then  I guess he decided he didn't want it anymore.

Tiffy - I figured the fish smell might be quite appealing.  He LOVES fish.  When I pull out the mackerel he does a little happy dance. *laughing*

    Thanks again everyone!!
