    Beef Necks

Hi there! I bought Penny her first meaty bone today! I was at the store and saw some really cheap beef neck pieces. And my mom agreed to let me get them for Penny. So, how do I serve these? Do they count as an RMB or recreational bone? Can she eat the whole bone? The bones aren't very long. They are cut. And I will be holding it for her, as she is a gulper. Any suggestions? Thanks! Oh and please note that Penny is a 9 lb Min Pin.

I would just give it to her as a treat, yes she can eat the whole bone she will be fine just watch her with it being her first one. Give it to her raw don't do anything with it just take it out of the bag and give it to her.

You can give it fresh or freeze it first, but since you said shes a gulper I would freeze it.  Definately freeze the unused portions and thaw when needed, dont just store them in the fridge.

She is small so I would think one would be a meal and not a treat.  Im not the most informed on raw... but if your only planing on doing this once in a while I dont think you need to worry too much about balancing the diet.  I could be wrong though.  Hopefully someone with better info will be along soon.

Certainly dont just feed necks for any length of time as its not balanced... but like I said its a good suppliment and teeth cleaning tool....

This is the only info I have on it.

If she manages to eat the bone within a few minutes it's a meal.  If not - it's a recreational bone.

Beef neck bones are pretty tough - I'd be surprised if she managed to actually consume one. :)

Okay. Well, I gave one to her yesterday (outside.) I held the bone, so she could rip the meat off. But she didn't consume the bone. She just chews and chews on it. She consumed a bit of it, by chewing it. Yes, I will only be supplementing her diet with this. She eats Innova EVO kibble as her regular food. When should I throw the bone out? All the meat is gone and she enjoys just chewing it, getting at the inner marrow. Will it go bad? Can I keep it till the next time she gets a beef neck, which will be in the next few days? Thanks!

I think the marrow goes bad so each time shes done you need to put it back in the freezer until next time...  not sure though... but I always do that with raw bones.

I usually throw out the rec bones when I get tired of tripping over them or stepping on them.  That may be a couple days or weeks.  NEver had a problem with them going bad.

My recreational bones don't go bad, either.

I just gathered up a bunch and tossed them, because Emma was starting to bite chunks off of them, and I was tired of rolling over onto them (yes, yes, my dogs chew bones on my bed, and I haven't died of salmonella!).

Okay, thanks. She still does enjoy chewing on it, even though it's dry now. I'll just throw it out when I give her her next piece.

So when the marrow turns a white color and has been sitting out for a few days its still okay if they eat it?

Marrow doesn't last long enough here so I can't help you on that one!  They can hollow out anything within a couple hours . . .

I throw bones away when I get sick of looking at them.  Usually once a week or so.

Mine was given a marrow bone when he was a pup he loved it, he had it up intil 7 months ago when I threw it out as we moved. He would always get when we played games. He is now 2 and a half it never hurt him, there wasn't much left of it when I threw it though.
