"Naturally Complete" from Purina's Dog Chow line ...

I was food shopping the other day and saw Purina's new Dog Chow "forumla" at the end of one aisle.  Though I never go down the pet aisle for anything, I did notice it on the end, due to its blatant advertsiting effort.

Out of curiosity, I checked its ingredients.  The results were unexpected.  Keep in mind that this is a variation of Purina Dog Chow.  Ground yellow corn was, of course, numero uno in the list, followed by "chicken meal".  If that wasn't surprising enough, I read on to see "beef" as the third ingredient ... and then the typical stuff in Purina products ("soybean meal";).  But it gets better -- they also use brown rice, oatmeal and pearled barley.

This dog food is, in my opinion, better than both Beneful and their O.N.E. brand.  It has no by-products, either.  I'd never let Roxie touch it, but it's a nice alternative to someone seeking something better than normal Dog Chow, Beneful, or the overpriced O.N.E. variations.

Well, thats good news. All these little "baby steps" that pet food companies are taking to better their formulas hopefully will improve the health of pets. I agree that its still not a good food, but now maybe all the people who fed their dogs the old dog chow will update to this one.

The unfortunate part of it all though is that, because these companies are money mongers, though they may improve their ingredients to look more nutritious and natural the likelyhood of them ever ceasing to use things like BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin are next to none.

It's refreshing to see them putting in a little effort though...

I'm pretty sure this used mixed tocopherols as the preservative, not BHA, BHT or Ethoxyquin.  I could be wrong, though.

And yeah, it is nice to see an improvement.  They have ways to go, but this is a good step in the right direction.

Weird I always go down the pet aisle when I go to WalMart (I love getting different collars and toys, not to mention Lizzie's food is currently purchased from them) and the only new food ive seen is the Pedigree Lamb and Rice Meal. I'll have to check in on that food, even if its just to look

You're the one that feeds Beneful but wants something better, right?  If so, you should check this out.  The bag is a dark orange -- not to be confused with the psycho orange bag of the Dog Chow Indoor formula -- color with "Naturally Complete" in giant letters.

And I didn't see it at the local Wal*Mart Supercenter; I saw it at Kroger (a grocery store chain).  Wal*Mart will probably carry it sooner or later, though.

Yep I feed Beneful and even though Lizzie loves it if I can feed something better I will. I am going out tomorow to buy a bag of Exclusive to see how she does.

I know that alot of people say that if something works for you dont change it (even if it is what you guys call yuck food) and Beneful is working for Lizzie but I want a higher quality food that will help her grow a nice full and shiny coat, and something that is obviously healthier

Honestly, if Roxie loved eating "yuck food" and liked it more than her Chicken Soup, I would have no choice.  I'd rather her eat and be happy than to force her to eat something she didn't like.  So do not feel embarrassed, ashamed, or sad about feeding Beneful to Lizzie.  Sure, it's not the best food for her, but at least she does eat well and obviously enjoys it.

I tried a lot of foods before Roxie stuck with Chicken Soup, so I know how you feel. [:)]

lol I know what you mean! Lizzie loves her food but maybe she will love Exclusive also? If she does then it would be great but like you said I wont force her to eat anything she doesnt like

I do hope she enjoys Exclusive!  Keep us updated! [:)]

Someone donated 100 lbs of Exclusive lamb and rice to us - I've been pretty pleased with this so far.  I have an all black dog that is turning reddish from the high beet pulp content but otherwise it's a decent feed store type feed.

Purina One has come out with a natural formula too, but I think it's very comparable to the new Purina Chow Naturals.  Of course corn as the first ingredient was a concern, but I also don't like to see animal digest[:'(]

Normal Dog Chow does contain by-products, but this "Naturally Complete" does not.  [:)]

Form my understanding animal digest isn't a bad ingredient but can be a problem for an allergy dog because the source ( or sources) isn't named. For example, Pro Plan Skin and Stomach is supposed to be good for dogs with allergies but Jessie is allergic to chicken so I wouldn't feed it because chicken may be in the animal digest. This is Purina's most expensive food; comparable to some of the holistic brands in price; you'd think that they would use ingredients that had identifiable sources; they also use animal fat and brewers rice is the second ingredient.
