Too hot out to eat?

    Too hot out to eat?

My two dogs, (1 year old & 9 1/2 week old), haven't eaten very much in the last two days. The temperature here has skyrocketed, so it is a lot hotter than they are used to. Do you think that is why they are not eating? Has anyone noticed their dogs not eating very much when it is hotter out?

I just went through this very recently with my puppy, Ben.  We had a heatwave and he was just not interested in food during the day.  I got around it by temporarily feeding larger portions of his daily food ration in the early morning and late evening, when the weather was cooler, and just giving him a little food during the day.  Frankly, he wasn't always eating that, but I tried.

I think it's not uncommon, and I don't actually feel much like eating in really hot weather.  Just try to get them to eat when you can, and keep them cool.

I don't think you need to worry too much,  as long as the food is available to your pups.  Dogs can skip a few meals and still be fine.  If you're concerned, you could try adding some frozen veggies to the bowl.  The cold might get them interested a little bit.

I just remembered something I learned in college...digestion creates heat.  Perhaps dogs know this and that's why they don't seem to eat as much during the really hot days.

Jake has not been eating his morning meal.  He eats very little of it if anything.  He has been eating his dinner time meal, and has been hesitant to eat his snack before bed.  He's driving me crazy.  But maybe it is the weather like you said.  I was worried about it at first, but maybe he's just going through a phase or either that it's too hot.

They didn't want to eat dinner last night, (it was so hot out, neither did I), but I just kept their food out for them until bedtime.  Just before bed, they both started scarfing down the food.  As long as they get some food in them that is good.  I fed them extra early this morning, before it started getting hot out.  They both ate.

    Thank you for the replies!

I think is the heat, we were in the 100's a couple of days ago and Romeo looked at his food had a bit and turned away, he ate with gusto today.

Its been in the 90's here, so I feed early in the morning before its too hot.

Its been horrid here, drenching rainfall and high humidity and high heat.  But nothing stops my kids from eating.  Maybe cause I feed cold (thawed) Nature Variety raw meat patties.  I feed at 8AM and 6 PM.  (and the bulldog eats at 3PM too)

I offer cool or frozen treats this time of year and put ice in the water buckets.  The main thing is to make sure they are getting LOTS of fluids.

My guys always eat less in the summer, even when they work hard.  Winter is the big calorie-burning time.

It was really hot here (and unusually humid) yesterday and Max pretty much ignored his food bowl all day, then ate it all at night.  Usually he just sort of grazes and nibbles throughout the day. When I fill his water bowl in the a.m. I fill it about 2/3 full then toss in ice cubes for him. He seems to enjoy that.

Yup, Toby didn't want much to do with his food during the heatwave we had the last few days. As soon as it got cooler.....he began eating his normal amount. I didn't even feel like eating when it was SO hot!
