Pet Lovers Dog Food Question

Ok so back to the questions...Is Purina ProPlan an ok thing to continue feeding my puppy, or should I perhaps look into another food?

Yes Purina is an ok thing to feed, but do you want to feed your dog a run of the mill ok food with questionable ingredients or do you want to feed a food  that is meat based with healthful ingredients that you actually know what they are? I refuse to feed my dogs anything that i dont know what it is!!

You can rotate on a per bag basis if you want.I currently have 5 open bags on the go.I have a thing with variety [8|] and rotate mostly every day.

Other brands to add to luvntzu's list are:

    Natural Balance
    EVO
    Wysong archetype

There are so many more,bu my minds gone a blank [&o]

To answer the original question- would I continue with ProPlan?  Nope.
    Dont' like it.

The only thing on my feeding list anymore after years of trying nearly everything is PetGuard Lifespan.  The dogs look and feel great. It smells fresh. They love it. I love it for them.  It has chelated minerals in it, and vitamin C, which I think these things make a huge difference.,

Therea re many more quality foods out there, like Innova, Canidae, etc.

    Good luck :)

    ORIGINAL: Denali

The smell from the factory always made me wonder if it was really good for my dog or not. Wonder if they give tours. Never thought about it until now.

I can't imagine any dog food cooking smelling good. I've mentioned this a couple of time before so sorry everyone, but my BF's job requires him to spend a lot of time in the Purina plant in Oklahoma City and he says that it is cleaner and has much stricter standards than many of the human food processing plants he spends time in. It doesn't stink at all inside, but I don't think he has had reason to be around the raw ingredients.

    I personally recommend Canidae.

well, actually, it is POSSIBLE that corn causes cancer. All corn is contaminated with low levels of aflatoxins, which is a carcinogen. You feed your dog a corn-based food every day of his life, he's getting a whopping lifetime exposure to those aflatoxins. Most other corn-fed animals are slaughtered while quite young and so don't have time to develop cancer.

Well, I want to feed my dog something that I "KNOW" what it is. No guess work.

I have noticed that since switching him from Pet Lovers food to Purina food, that he seems to leave more in the yard. Solid though it may be, I have to clean up twice as much, or so it seems. I know a good pet food claims that your dog goes less, therefore absorbs more.

I'm not sure I know about corn causing cancer either, I have something doctors say could turn in to cancer if left unwatched. I've been told to avoid tomatoes, but not corn. I myself will have to do more research on that for my own benefit, as well as our dogs.

I will check out the list of foods provided here and see if our puppy does well with any of them. I will also compare prices to cooking my own food. My friend sent along her book of recipes she gives to her dog. We don't have a bunch of money right now because we just bought a house, so the top of the line, most expensive brand may be on hold for a while, but we still want to make a good decision on what to feed him to keep him healthy for years to come.

I've fed ProPlan in various flavours ... My lab did really well on the Lamb formula until he started showing some skin & ear issues and the vet told me to switch.  (He'd been on it 6+ months.)  He seems to develop sensitivities to foods after a period of time ... it's been fun. *sigh*

I had no issue with it.  There are a lot worse foods out there.  I would try it again if I thought it would work for my dogs.

I also like Canidae.  I've had excellent results and it's less expensive than some of the other super premium brands.  I also feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select and Natural Balance which are more expensive but come in allergy formulas.

But the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach formula does NOT CONTAIN CORN.  The rest of the Pro Plan formulas do, but PP Sensitive Stomach does not.
