Not eating

    Not eating

I had this posted in "Puppies", but I thought this is probably a better place for it.

This is the fourth day that we have had our little Daisy.  She is so full of energy and having regular bowl movements.  I am just worried because since we have had her she hasn't really eaten much.  She will only eat a couple of kibbles per meal (maybe 5 or 6 kibbles - feeding her 3 times a day).  And the only way I can get her to take more than one kibble is by hand feeding her, but after a few hand fed kibbles, all she wants to do is cuddle.  Is this normal when you first get a puppy?  My other dog LOVED food, and I couldn't keep him away from it.  The breeder gave me a baggie of food that she said she was feeding Daisy, so I haven't changed her food.

This morning she ate a little bit, but hasn't eaten since. I bought some different puppy food, but now she won't even take anything out of my hand. One thing she is doing is trying to eat my adult dog's food. Do you think that I should let her have some of it????? Just to get something into her??? I just don't know if can harm her at all.

What brands of puppy food do you have? What brand is your adult eating?

The breeder told me that she gave me science diet, but I have used science diet before, and it doesn't look like that. And the new puppy food that I bought is Solid Gold - Hundchen Flocken. My adult dog food is Solid Gold - Barking at the Moon.

    Also......
I do have some frozen packages of raw food, should I try to mix that in to the dry food???
I just don't want to add to many things so quickly and shock her system.

I would definately ditch the science diet or whatever it is.
You dont mention your pups breed?? I'm not sure if BATM have the same guidelines as evo in regards to large breed dogs, but if you have a small breed than the BATM would be just fine.
Correct me if i'm wrong but arent the regular solid gold lines rather grain heavy? Perhaps your dog knows what she wants, and it's meat, not grain [;)]

As for the raw food,if it were me i would start her on it straight away.I've always fed my dogs a wide variety from day one.But you're the one who knows her best, you may feel it best to wait until she settles in a bit better.Up to you [:D]

I really don't know much about the regular Solid Gold line. I had my adult dog on Welness Puppy food. He has been really picky and I just switched him over to BATM and he really likes it. So I thought that I would try the new puppy out on Solid Gold as well. My dogs are both Yorkie-Poo's. I will go back to the store tomorrow and maybe get the Welness Puppy food, and then do that with the raw food. But for tonight, I will let her have some of the BATM. I just want to make sure that they are getting good food, I don't want to feed them crap, but at the same time I need them to eat it.

Thank You so much for your help!

since you have only had your puppy for a few days, she may just need sometime to adjust to your home to become comfortable with eating regularly.

you might also try mixing in some canned food (not sure if that was mentioned already).

    good luck! [:)]

edit: you could also try wetting the kibble with some warm water as well.

I tried to switch my puppy to Hundchen-Flocken too and she hated it.   She would pick out those kibbles, put them on the floor and continue eating her normal food.   So it might just be that.

Last night I gave her some of the BATM, and she gobbled it down.  She even wanted more!  This morning same thing.  So now I know that she does want to eat, she just doesn't like what I am giving her.  I feel so much better knowing she has something in her system.  I will try something different today.... Maybe Welness.

why not just leave her on the batm?

I think Solid Gold Barking at the Moon is considered an all life stages formula - meaning that you can feed it to any dog of any age and since your kid-o is a small breed the large amount of protien BATM contains will not hurt her growth.  Sounds good to me.

Solid Gold's food is meat based except for one formula called Holistique, which is Oatmeal Barley and Fish. Solid Gold Holistique is meant to be mixed with their other formulas for weight loss or by its self for dogs with serious kidney disease to lower the protein level and actually I've seen dogs on death door step turn around on Sold Gold Holistique.

I would keep her on BATM,why change something that is working so well? ??
    • Gold Top Dog
I would definitely keep her on the Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. It's an excellent food and since she's a small breed puppy it should be just fine for her. And especially since she likes the food, I say- stick with it! [:)]

Thank you for all of the reply's.

Well, she hasn't eaten a thing since this morning. This afternoon, when I went to feed her the second meal, she took a snif at BATM and walked away....wouldn't even take it out of my hand. Then this evening, same thing. So I went and got a sample of Welness, but nope, wont take a bite. I have some Raw food that I had in the freezer. Got some of that and mixed it with both foods, but she will not take it! She tasted it and then wouldn't eat any more. I am just really worried that she is going to get sick from not eating.
If she hasn't eaten since morning, could that hurt her?
She has a Vet appt on Friday, but if she hasn't eaten by tomorrow afternoon, should I get her in sooner?

I know I am probably over reacting about this, its just really scaring me.

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!
