    pig ears

    hey guys!

I was just wondering if i could give my dogs raw pig ears, it says thier is a solution added, this is only a snack, so there shouldent be a problem right?

    Thank you,

I personally wouldn't give any of my babies pig ears. I have never heard of raw pig ears but I would be afraid of bacteria. There are much better treats to give you baby, mainly raw bones. I give mine lamb and goat stew bones and shanks and they love them. They chew on them for hours. They have never gotten an upset tummy or the poops from them.

Nope, not if there is a solution added I wouldn't.

the ONLY way my guys are gonna get pigs ears if I find a farmer who will chop them off for me after butchering and I bring 'em home and roast them myself.....

Ewwww... just had a mental picture of hairy pigs ears in your oven under the broiler lol....
though that would be the only way I'd feed them myself :) .. I don't think I'd have the stomach to roast my own~!

I've given raw pig ears twice, but they were straight from the company store and there was no solution added. (When we moved here, the only job my husband could find was at a pork factory...never ate so much pork in my life lol). Anyway, they sell just about everything in the company store, so one day Brett picked up a pack of 4 for like a dollar. I wasn't sure what to do with it, and I knew it wouldn't last long with my two, so I threw them in the freezer for a while to make them a little more challenging.

I've given mine pig ears but they wern't dipped in anything  The dogs loved them frozen.  I've also bouth pig feet and they are also a big hit as are the tails, but they can be quite fatty..

Oh yikes!  Hadn't thought about the HAIR!  Yeah, that would be kind of gross in the oven! [:'(]

My dog when younger had pig ears and got strange with them.  He didn't eat them but liked to dig up the place trying to bury it.  It got annoying to find that disgusting thing under our pillows when we crawled into bed at night.  He would growl and act totally odd with them.  Guarding them etc.  It brought out his inner wild animal side I guess!  I stopped buying them right away.  Some dogs I have heard get a runny stool from them because they are quite greasy.

Glenda, have you ever roasted a pig before?

If you don't scrape ALL the hair off - Ew!  Smells like someone got their hair caught in the dryer!

Shaving a pig - yum!  (not)

On our first anniversary (many, many years ago) DH and I drove from San Diego to Mexico City.  While we were stopped in some very remote little village we saw a little boy about 10 or so with a platter of pig skins that he was selling - not the little crunchy ones that you can buy in the stores.  These were about the size of a plate and still had a lot of the stiff hairs in them.  We decided to pass on lunch there![:'(]

I wouldn't feed raw pork to my dogs because of trichinosis. I always make sure pork is 100% cooked for me and my dog! When I eat pork chops, she gets a bite now and then. [;)]

I avoid those cooked/dried pig ears in the feed store because I suspect they are just crawling with bacteria, and besides that, they're just too gross for me! Yeeeeecccccchhhhhhhh. [:'(]

The hairy chicharones you saw in Mexico, that's so funny!

Does anyone remember singe-ing a chicken over a candle flame before cooking, burning off all the leftover feathers? That's how my mom taught me to prepare chicken long ago.
