    Innova EVO vs. Nature's Variety

Ok, I've narrowed my choices down to two kibbles - I want to switch my dogs to one of these, but I'm not sure which is better.  I went in to a dog store nearby to check the price of Innova and started talking raw diets with the owner, who suggested Nature's Variety Raw Instinct, which is both grain and potato free.  Supposedly each kibble has a coating of freeze dried raw meat... here's the ingredients: [linkhttp://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1404&-session=naturesvariety:477CE2C90ed2200578xPO337F477]http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1404&-session=naturesvariety:477CE2C90ed2200578xPO337F477[/link]   The store owner said she loved it and everything, but the first ingredient is listed as "chicken meal", not chicken.  Has anyone had any experience with this food?  I think I might just go with Innova, but I wanted to check first and see some feedback on this stuff.

"Meal" behind a meat- like chicken meal, turkey meal, etc. just means it's that meat with the water removed. So it actually means that there's more meat than if it just said "chicken".

It's a tough choice between those two foods. I was trying to choose between those and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon (also grain free). I ended up choosing the Solid Gold, but my local store doesn't carry it, they ordered it for me but it didn't come in so I decided to go with another food for now. Just in case you haven't seen that one here it is:

Anyway, what I would actually do is rotate between the Innova EVO and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct. Like every 3 months or so.... no one food is perfect and that way you can fill in the gaps of what may be missing with one.

Hm, I didn't even think about rotating it...  that might be a good idea, thanks!  I had heard about Solid Gold, but I don't *think* they had it at the store I'll be buying food from, but then again I didn't look that closely for it.  I'll check when I go back again.

Just out of curiosity: Nature's Variety has some weird ingredients in it, the main one that caught my eye was quail eggs.  Quail eggs???  I mean, where the heck do they get quail eggs?  Do they have a quail farm or something?  And pheasant eggs!  Weird.

Yup. quail and pheasant farms.  There's a couple of quail farms not far from me, in fact.  When we've finished moving I plan to go down and see whether I can get a deal on culls for Ben.

They raise quail for restaurants, and hunters - mostly the latter around here.

I too am switching , but I just decided to go with INNOVA EVO. My main reasons were because its a high protein/ low carb food and I want  my Lab to loose a few extra pounds.  So far I have'nt noticed any bad changes such as allergies or diarreah and he sure eats it up fast.  I can tell he really loves the taste of it.  Good luck with your decision..

I would pick neither- seriously!  There is a lot of ash in the grain free foods and potatoes have such a high glycemic index and are full of carbs- I see no reason why they're better than grains like rice. How can they market a food as "what to feed when you can't feed raw" when it is processed, fully cooked, and contains starchy carbohydrates??
    I am not a fan.

I think one of the posters said it best when she said....There is No one single greatest food.!  It's whatever works best for your particular dog and how they do on it.  I am giving Innova EVO a try to see how my Lab does on it.  If he looses some weight, loves the taste, and is more playful then I'm sold, but if not then I'll simply try another one.  Good luck with your choices.
