Ice cream?

    Ice cream?

I have a question, is ice cream safe for dogs?

For some reason, I always thought their stomach's wouldn't be able to handle it and it would give them diarrhea...is this true??

If it is, I know chocolate is out of the question...should I just stick with plain Vanilla?

ive given my dogs little bits of ice cream.  its not GOOD for them, but i dont think it will hurt them either unless you give them more than just a taste or so.

Too much of anything dairy can give them upset stomach, but a little bit is fine.  I would say away from chocolate just to be safe.

My old Irish Setter loved  ice cream, and we would give him as coopfrom time to time.  Once he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his time was limited--we thought about a week after diagnosis, but it turned into exactly 10 weeks) we let him have lots of ice cream.  If I made banana splits for dessert, he got come, complete with the toppins, whipped cream and a cherry.  If we had apple pie with ice cream, he got a slice of pie with ice cream.. And the day we knew the cancer had spread and decided to send him to the bridge before he got bad, his last meal was a large bowl of buttered pecan ice cream.  If it had not been for the fact we knew his time was limited we would not have fed him like we did, but he was in dog Heaven those 10 weeks with all kinds of his beloved fruits and veggies and sweets.

One of the ice cream places near us, Brusters, gives a free "doggie sundae". It's a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a milkbone. Gingerbread loved it! He didn't appear to have any stomach upset either. It's not something that's great for them I'm sure, but once in awhile I think it's okay.

We occasionally give Zoe one of the doggie ice creams but have found that during the night she ends up peeing without warning from it.  My bf's theory is that it has so much water in it that it is too much for her tiny bladder.  As she digests it, it is probably mainly water and thus, the pee.  As a result, no more ice cream :).

Are you giving her Frosty Paws??  Are you giving her the whole cup??  Cause Willow is about 45 lbs and only gets about a 1/4 of those at a time.

Winston gets frosty paws when it's really hot out, but only a little at a time.  Also, at doggie day camp, they have fat free, lactose free, sugar free soft serve for the dogs - which he LOVES.

Oh.... so maybe Zoe was having too much at once.  Yeah we gave her the whole little cup at once.  With the one we have left we'll only scoop out a little for her :).  We didn't even think of that!

My bf's sister in law's family gives their dog a doggy ice cream every night after dinner!  He is a black lab.

I'll occasionally give Maddi a baby-sized amount of vanilla ice cream on a hot day. It really helps her cool down... and boy does she love me after that!

Where do you find Frosty Paws?  Grocery store or pet store? Toward the end of obedience class we took all the dogs downtown, in and out of various stores etc. and at the end of class we all met at Baskin Robbins & the teacher bought all the dogs a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  It was a major hit.[:D]

Our dogs get icecream about 2x a month in the summer months.  I've never had digestive issues with anyone, but we feed a myrid of leftovers, I rotate foods, etc. so our dogs really have never had sensitive stomach issues in general.

We usually just order the kiddie cones wherever we are.

I actually looked at the ingredients on the frosty paws (they sell them at the kennel attached to the vet I work for)...they were NASTY!!! I can't remember exactly (they don't have it on their website), but it was meat by products, wheat germ, blah blah it was icky though....It would probably be better just to give some regular "human" ice cream...I bet they do like it! [:D]
