tomatoes and bread question

    tomatoes and bread question

I homecook for my dog.  Are tomatoes okay to give him?  If yes, with or without the skin and seeds?  What nutritional value do tomatoes have for a dog?  The recipe I have calls for tomatoes, but I thought tomatoes were bad for dogs.  What can I substitute for the tomatoes?

Is it okay to also put in a recipe whole wheat bread?  If not, what is a good substitue for the wheat bread?  My sister's maltese is 10 pounds and she is only giving him 1/4 piece of bread but the ingredients has 35mg of sodium for a 1/4 piece of bread.  Is that too much sodium?

    Thank you,
    Michelle

I frequently add stewed tomatoes to my homecooked.  I do NOT add bread of any kind.

    Glenmar,

Why do you not use bread of any kind?

I'm gonna HAVE to make my NAME bigger in my sig....no one seems to see it.[8D]

I don't give my dogs breads.  I give them very little grain...4 oz of brown rice in a 20 qt pot.  Dogs don't need grains, not many if any, and I see no reason to give them processed bread with sugars and salts in it.  Oh and preservatives to keep it fresh....

My Irish Setter would raid my garden and eat every tomatoe right off the vine, red and green.  He LOVED tomatoes and he often got a little tossed salad--lettuce and tomatoes only--as he loved it so much.  He was one dog that wold have been happy being a veggie only dog.

Tomato is included in a few dog food formulas so it must be ok, right?  LOL, I'm just kidding - but yes, tomato is ok.

I do some grains because it works best with my dogs' way of life.  They have an artificially jacked up activity level and would eat me out of house and home if I tried to meet their energy needs with just meat and veggies.  I know, I've tried!

Anyway, my vet once had me put an older BC I had here on - get this - a diet of strictly Wonder White bread (it's a long story but it worked very nicely).  I have to say he sure looked good for the three weeks he was on it - this was before I switched back to grains and he wasn't doing well on the grain free.  Anyway, bread is fine if you have no problem with wheat in the diet.  For a dog that's never been exposed to wheat, it can be fine as an occaisional thing.

Emma was once on a diet of "bread and cookies" per the vet, LOL. It worked, for her, too, for the short time that she needed next to NO protein in her diet. Then, I started adding egg whites, and worked up to tofu, then fish.

Now, though, my dogs don't get any bread, or any grains. It doesn't suit their needs, at this time, and they don't need them, with their health issues (Emma's epileptic, and Teenie possibly has cancer).

jake loves whole wheat toast with real butter.  the butters not bad for him is it?  as a treat.

When I use butter in anything to do with the dogs, I use real butter.  Never very much of it, either.  The only time it comes into play is using it to carmelize meat or rice to tempt a puny appetite.

I'd honestly just give the toast as a treat, however - dogs don't need butter to love bread.  [;)]

jake does, he wont eat it without the butter, hes very picky p

    How funny!  [:D]

How about butter spray?  It's basically just buttermilk, flavoring, and a thickening agent I think.  I just worry about the fat after my experiece with pancreatitis.  I shudder when I hear fellow BC handlers recommend pouring bacon fat on kibble for extra energy for a hard keeper.

It's probably fine though, if your dog has been eating it for a while with no problems.

Tomatoes are fine to feed to your dog. Tomato is a good source for antioxidant, lycopene (red tomatoes), and vitamin C.

Tomatoes are a member of the nightshade (??) family and the green stems and leaves can be toxic.  If I remember correctly the green tomatoes themselves can be a problem as well.
