    sprayed-on fat

I know that some pet food companies use leftover restaurant grease and spray it on the kibbles to entice a dog to eat it. I was wondering if Royal Canin does the same?
I am asking because I bought a bag today (after being so fed up with Jetta refusing to eat her food) and Royal Canin is supposed to be really palatable.  Well thats true! She loves it, which is a first. But that also got me wondering if they use the grease to make the flavor more appealing.

IMO, I would think that *IF* they did, you would see some type of generic fat listed since they would not be able to list a specific fat source. The renderings from restaraunts are mixed fats and oils and are then RE-RENDERED and purified (lol) before being resold for pet foods and other purposes.

Talow is another word they use for grease from resturants. If it has this in the list of ingredients then I would question it. Also you can call them and ask flat out if they do this.

Because Royal Canin uses chicken fat, it is not restaurant grease b/c that would be a generic "animal fat" or "tallow" as kennel_keeper and forpaws mentioned :)

Oh good. That makes me feel better. I know Royal Canin isn't as good as innova, eagle, etc, but a  food isn't any good if a dog won't eat it. Jetta is so finicky and I don't want her to eat a food for 2 meals a day if she doesn't like the taste. Plus, Royal Canin isn't really that bad-- really the only questionable ingredient is corn gluten meal, but that isn't in the top few ingredients.

Just curious which Royal Canin formula it is?

Its actually the dental care one-- I was going to get the special, indoor adult, or beauty formula, but after looking at the ingredients I figured that the dental formula's ingredients were actually better.

Thanks, I was just curious because Gingerbread has also been turning his nose up at the awesome food I've been buying him! I bought TO Southwest Chicken & Herbs a few days ago and he's hardly eating it. :( Weird because when I had a sample of it awhile ago he really liked it. Now, twice this week he's thrown up from an empty stomach when he had a bowl of food right there!

Anyway, I'm not trying to hijack your post, I just agree that it doesn't matter how good the food is if your dog doesn't eat it! [:(] For now I'm going to try actually mixing the canned food in with the dry instead of just putting it on top. But I'm keeping the Royal Canin in mind just in case.

The Royal Canin "special 30 mini" has worked wonders for my dog.  If any of you remember from my previous posts, you know my dog turned his nose up to EVERYTHING after about a week of eating it (Timberwolf organics, innova, innova EVO, Solid gold, etc etc).  He has been on the RC for over a month now and finishes his dry food EVERY DAY!! (so excited! lol) This is the first time I just purchased a 15 lb bag of dog food (knowing he'll eat it, lol).  He also only poops about once a day now, which is a great change from the 2-3 times a day on the other foods.  Definatley worth a try!

Yep, Jetta won't eat most super premium holistic kibble. But she seems to like the royal canin. I wanted to give her the special 30 because that is supposed to be their most palatable formula, but I wasn't too sure about the 22% fat content.--I think she would probably gain too much weight on that one. The dental care formula has less fat (14%) and she still seems to like it okay.

Royal Canin seems to be one of the most palatable foods, I have had a couple of picky eaters and RC is one of the few foods that my picky guys seemed to really like, and I have tried a lot of foods. Bil-Jac is also a very palatable food, but some people may have issues with it's ingredients, but dogs seem to love it.

You could also try the MINI Beauty 26.....is has a higher protein amount than the Dental one, but I think it is still low in fat (and my dog also liked the samples of it).

Funny, all 3 of my dogs did the same thing on the TO. All formulas and my Dusty really threw it up.  All 3 began eating tremendous amounts of grass on the product. I've slowly been giving the Ocean Blue as a treat to him and he likes that but my Peanut, likes the Ocean Blue and Gabby refuses to eat any of the TO products.
I need a bit more convincing on the Royal Canin, corn gluten meal still bothers me, but I can be swayed if I understand the reason for this ingredient.  Plus, I read somewhere(of course I forget where) that Royal  Canin had a recall at one time, I don't like recalls makes me  very weary of the food.
But, back to the subject, as long as there's no restaurant grease, looks like it's a pretty good product of course except for the understanding of corn gluten meal, the gluten is where I don't get it.

Yeah, I also wouldn't be comfortable with the Special 30's 22% fat. I would worry about pancreatitis...

The corn gluten meal is in there to add extra amino acids to the already present "essential" amino acids found in the chicken and chicken meal (this helps with coat conditioning).  It is not harmful to any dog unless they have an allergy to corn.  Other than that, it is a great source of amino acids from protein (effective when paired with an animal protein), linoleic acids, and some carbohydrates for energy.  I did lots of research on this through my universities archives and talked with my professor of animal nutrition to see her thoughts on the subject matter (which are what I mentioned above). :)  Also, the recall was on the RC veterinary canned food (kidney one I think) because it had excess vitamin D3 in it.  No dogs were harmed and the company found out after they tested their food and the food was in the process of being distributed (not many were sold).  Royal Canin has been known to have awesome quality control (the only company in Europe to be approved by their equivalent of AAFCO for testing EVERY batch of food!)  Hope this helps

*The high fat content is helpful to me since my pup is in need of gaining some weight.  I have considered trying the Beauty 26 in the future or Solid Gold's wee bit in the future when his metabolism has slowed down.
