Cat food for the dog

    Cat food for the dog

Willow really likes this tuna canned cat food from Solid Gold.  Don't ask how I even have it here since I don't have a cat.  But, anyway, she seems to like a small amount mixed in with her food.  And, since I'm trying to get her to eat so she'll gain a few pounds, I was wondering if there is any harm in letting her keep having it.

    Thanks.

I dont see the harm.My dogs finish off my cats food nearly every single night.Plenty of people add cat food to entice their dogs to eat.

Thats actually really good stuff.  My poor allergy kitty lived off it for a while until we figured out she was allergic to chicken.  Ben gets a can every so often - it's really nice and rich but it's pretty much just tuna and vitamins, if I remember correctly. Solid Gold didn't even label cat and dog food seperately until just a few years ago, so I'm sure it's fine.

Hmm, i just went to the web site to look at the tuna food and they've got something called "Blended Tuna" now - that's not the same as what I have here (giant case I bought when kitty was eating it).  Mine is just Tuna and vitamins.  That one has tapioca and canola oil, too - which are both kind of iffy for Ben.  I hope they still make the other stuff (need a pouty face here).

Becca--That's the one I have, the blended tuna.  It's tuna, water, tapioca (why??), canola oil and then the vitamins.

She really likes it and my thinking was a least there are some vitamins.  If I just gave her human tuna she wouldn't get that.

I guess I'll keep going with it unless she has a problem with it or someone says I shouldn't.

Believe it or not, 9 Lives has a 90% tuna too, tuna, water and the vitamins.  I didn't get it but was shopping and saw it.

Last summer when i took Honey in for her dental, she was not to have food nor water after midnight.  That morning as we were going out the door, she grabbed a mouthful of Pippi's dry cat food that had a little canned mixed in.  When we got there to have her blood work/dental done, they asked if she had eaten anything after midnight and I told them all she had was a mouth full of of cat food as we went by it on the porch.  Turns out that could make something in her blood work be high but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.  So apparently at least the dry can raise something in the blood work.  And they did say cat food was not good for dogs.  We were talking dry with only a little canned.  I do not know if dry or canned makes any difference.

I've had dogs and cats living in the same house together for years and I've always had dogs who ate the cat food and never had a problem. I think they say the reason that cat food is not good for dogs is because it has higher amounts of things in it. One book I read is because cats smell differently than dogs so they add certain things in to entice cats to eat. Can't remember what it is they add right now and I don't have a bag around since I keep my pet food in containers.

Odie is always finishing off what little food the cat leaves.  I can't imagine it does any harm.

Things are a bit different at out house as the cat, who weighs 11 pounds, can run 65 pound Odie off his food.  What a weenie.  This behavior, when I observe it, results in a shoe being thrown at the cat.  [:)]

LAst week there was a dog in who wasnt eating much I forget why, but the lady said he would eat cat food and was that okay and the vet said "sure, its fine, if thats what he wants let him have it".  Now, I dont know if she said this because we wanted him to eat or because it really is fine but thats what she said.

I searched about it and most sites say not to let them eat it too often...

Well, I've been adding in a few spoonfuls of the Solid Gold blended tuna which is really a simple formula and she's loving it.  I've always thought she was more cat than dog, this just confirms it.

But, we've also discovered canned beef Evo which she really loves too.

Ive also heard that they like cat food better because it has more sodium, but thats not good for them.

Well, you'd have to look at individual brands to know if there is a lot of sodium.  But, there are also quite a few dog foods that have salt listed multiple ways.

What do you expect, Chows have cat feet, of course they like fish [:D] and hate getting their feet wet too.
My Chows loved cat food too but their favourite was a can of sardines in oil.
    Coats liked the oil too.
    Have fun.
