    Canned food fatty??

Ok, so I have been corrected in a thread and I wanted more details...[:)]

So the diet kibble may say 7-9% fat and a can of something may say 5% fat.  So which is less?  How much fat is really in that can in comaprison to the dry?  Is raw and veggies better for rapid weight loss than any diet kibble?

    Thanks!

Hi loveukaykay;  The formula for figuring the dry matter percentages of the nutrients in canned and kibble is determined by " Nutrient percent divided by the reciprocal of the moisture percent"

           [linkhttp://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/dm.html]http://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/dm.html[/link]

For example, if a kibble was 9% fat, assuming the moisture was 10%, you would divide 9% by 90 which is the reciprocal of 10; so with the moisture removed the kibble is 10% fat.  If the canned food says 5% fat on the label, you divide 5% by 20 which is the reciprocal of 80 and get 25% fat.

Thank you... I posted this because I looked at that website you posted in the other thread and was confused as all heck... thanks for clarifying it a bit![:)]

You're welcome;  I had to read the information a few times to understand it myself. I hope you find a good diet food for your dog.

For sure! Although any form of rapid weight loss is not good. I havnt seen one diet kibble that i would want to feed my dogs, even of the super premium kind. Comparing raw/veggies to any diet kibble is like comparing scotch fillet steak with chump steak, you just cant!Raw and veggies are healthy, diet kibble is full of fillers [&:]

Jessie needed to lose weight and I tried Eukanuba diet kibble ( forgot the exact name) and Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Weight Management; this was well before idog and before I learned a lot more about nutrition; anyway she didn't lose weight on either one even though I ended up feeding her a lot less then recommended. Two years later when she developed an allergy to chicken I changed her to Eagle Pack Holistic Fish, which is 40% fish meal, and fed her 25% less than recommended and she lost weight at the rate of a pound a week even though she was getting more calories than on the diet kibbles and she had more energy. I have since learned that dogs burn fat as energy and store unused carbs as fat ; Atkins for dogs works.

I think thats what Im going to try.  She was eating the lite Nutro, and while I think they regular Nutro Lamb and Rice is a good food, the ingredients in the lite are almost all grains, so I just dont feel like shes gonna get proper nutrition on that, besides she didnt lose any weight in about a year on it.  I will either do the raw and veggies or try the Eagle Pack since you had results on it.

Good luck with whatever you choose. When Jessie was on the Nutro lite the neighbor used to remark a lot about how shiny her coat was; but after she had been eating the Eagle Pack her coat was shinier, her hair got thicker and she had more energy. The fat in the Fish formula is 12% and it's 356 K/Cal per cup; I like it for Jessie's allergies because it has menhadden oil but I rotate her between the Fish, Lamb, and Duck.

I cant help thinking that diet foods are formlated to ensure dogs dont put ON any more weight, rather than helping them lose weight. If this makes any sense at all??

I think the only dogs that would lose weight on these foods are the ones fed the real crap ones, the foods filled with peanut hulls and grain fractions and other useless nutritionless ingredients, and the weight loss is due to malnutrition rather than the 'lite' ingredients in the food. These diets should NOT be fed long term as the sole source of food for any dog as IMHO it would be akin to starving the dog to death!

Honestly, I have never used a light food for any dog, around here. I use a regular calorie kibble (to be sure they're getting what they need... ) that's a quality I like. Even the really good brands' light kibbles are grain based. If I eat too many carbs, I start to gain weight, and I'm not a carnivore. They just don't need it. I use regular kibble, in reduced amounts, or raw or homecooked, in reduced amounts. Teenie lost over ten pounds this way. Emma had gotten chubby at one point, and easily shed it with simply reducing the amount I fed. Even breaking treats in half and only feeding half makes a difference.

Can I hi-jack this thread with a question about diet foods?

Is it possible that these types of foods would cause lower energy levels?  I swear my mom's beagle's energy levels have dropped since she started feeding the weight management formula....  Could this be the case?

The vet yesterday said "No way - it wouldn't have any effect" but I don't put much stock in our vets advice on dog food.... Their recommended list includes several which are NOT recommended here and he was not impressed with my choice of Canidae.

I'm just wondering if it's possibly related....

I think it could.  I have seen people here say that its not a good thing for them to live on long term, so there must be a reason for that.  I am going to try the Eagle Pack Holistic Fish like Janic said she did and see how that goes, if that doesnt work Im going to move to a raw and veggie diet and get her weight down that way.

I actually think any food can do that to a dog if it just doesnt agree with them.

If you read the labels on the lite foods they claim that they're formulated for you dog to lose weight while having plenty of energy and Jessie seemed fine on both the brands we tried; we never thought she COULD have more energy until we switched her to the Eagle Pack. Dogs need more meat in their diet than we do and I think that being back on a meat based diet is what gave her more energy. Has your mom had her beagle checked for thyroid problems? Weight gain and lack of energy are some of the symptoms of being hypothyroid.

Thanks!  I mentioned that to my mom as that's what I thought too but the vet told her the tests were expensive and not necessary... *sigh*

stay far away from those "lite" foods! many a dog will get lethargic on them, and actually gain weight. They are based on ideas about human metabolisms (i.e. fill em up with fiber).  Studies have directly compared those "lite" foods with a high protein/low carbohydrate diet in dogs, and surprise, dogs fed the low-carb diet lost body fat and retained good muscle; dogs fed the "lite" foods lost muscle and retained their body fat.
Best way to induce weight loss is to increase exercise and put the dog on a low-carb diet. Or just feed less of your current diet.
