    Need help with new dog

    Hi everyone,

My 83 yr old neighbor died none of her kids want to keep her 7 yr old peekapoo, so I am, since she knows me and Romeo and likes us very much.  I have had her for 2 days now and she does not want to eat.  I know it has to do a lot w/the fact her guardian passed, I am contacting my animal communicator so we can have a little chat.

Her name is Mindy and she is just a beauty who has been fed nothing but Ol'Roy, because that is all this lady could afford.  As far as I know the only vaccines she has ever gotten is rabies last year.  I am taking her to the vet tomorrow for full examination etc...

She will not eat raw which is what I feed Romeo, so I was thinking I will keep her on the processed food, but I don't have a clue.  I gave her some of the Innova, I keep handy for Romeo for when in a rush.  But the lady at the store was telling me that it would be best if I feed her senior food so I bought some Innova Senior canned which she seemed to like...any recommendations?

    Thank you in advance...

Maybe just to transition her from the Ol' Roy, you could add some of that to the canned or dry Innova and see if she'll eat that.  You're an angel for taking her in and I'm sure she's going to come around, but maybe the all the changes are a bit much right now.  Probably better to get her to eat something, even if it's not that great for now.

Kudos to you for taking in Mindy; even though Ol' Roy isn't a great food you need to change her over slowly to something else to prevent stomach upset. I would recommend a week or more, gradually phasing out the old food as you introduce the new food. Cathy's suggestion about adding some Innova senior canned to the dry food as you gradually add more dry Innova and less Ol' Roy is probably the best way to do it; good luck. How is Romeo getting along with Mindy?

I imagine her grief and sudden life change has a lot to do with her lack of appetite. She's likely confused and sad, poor thing.  Good for you for taking her- I bet she's adorable.

I woudl try some canned foods. I personally don't like senior foods because they're too low in protein to maintain good muscle mass.  I feed my senior minpin regular adult food- less if he's less active.

I hope she comes around soon for you, woudl lvoe to see pictures :)

    I agree with shamrockmommy.

She's been through a lot, and her system will probably go through some detoxing while adjusting to a new premium food. A nice slow switch to a regular adult diet and lots of lovin and care and she'll come around soon.

You're such an angel for taking her in.

    Thank you for your responses.

We talked to the animal communicator and explained what happened and let her know no matter what, she would be safe because she was going to stay with the two of us from now on, and seemed to perk up after that.

Romeo and Mindy have always gotten along, since we always arranged for play dates, and when I visited Judy I always took Romeo to see her, because she was crazy about him.  I did take the opportunity that I was talking to the communicator to inform Romeo of the new addition to the family and he liked that very much.

I made an appt with a holistic vet,  I need to asses her and also get her spayed as soon as possible.

I will take it easy with the transition to the new food and will stick to the adult food instead of the senior,  I think I am also going to try California Natural and see what she likes better.

I may be paranoid, but I have a living will with strict instructions as to where is Romeo going in case anything where to happen to me, now I added my little Mindy.

I will post pictures as soon as I take her to the groomers she needs it bad.

    Thank you again for everything.

If she likes Innova Senior canned - that's a good food, expecially for the older small dog's who tend to get kidney problems.  Maybe you could even slowly mix the raw in with it.  I used to work at a pet supplies store.  There was a couple I spoke to that took in a departed friend's lasa and they had the same problem.  The dog was used to Kibbles and Bits and no matter how hard they tried they couldn't get it to eat anything else.  Of course, I don't know how hard they tried.  Even the vet told him to give the over weight dog Innova Senior.  Not following my advice, they decided to feed the poor thing Pedigree pouched soft food.  Yuk

Thank you for taking Mindy in, I'm sure she will settle in a few weeks.  Too bad she's not already spayed.   You have gotten great suggestions, mine would be similar.  I would go with Innova senior or a top grade of food and be sure to gradually change her over.  It's great your taking her to the vets and the groomers this will make her feel better.   Be sure to make a list of all your questions to ask your vet.   I would have a full exam, fecal, bloodwork and x-rays.  Good luck and keep us posted on how she is doing.
