CET chews?

  Jessie is a Shepherd mix and is about the size of most Labs she meets. I usually get her a rawhide for large dogs but all the vet had in the Chews were small and medium so I got her the medium and it worked fine. I didn't see the large or extra large so I don't know which size would be best for a Dane. The medium chews vary a little but measure about 5 and a half to 6 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide; they're supposed to be for dogs that weigh 25 to 50 pounds. They are only about an eighth of an inch thick. I was surprised at how long they last considering how thin they are but they're very hard and apparently formulated to require a lot of chewing.  I watched Jessie chew one and she seems to use all the teeth including the back ones so I'm happy about that.  Even though she seems to be a strong chewer she's not a gulper; she has always chewed anything she has into small pieces before swallowing them. I wouldn't want a dog to swallow large pieces of this but you know how Bubblegum chews. You may find them cheaper than on the site above too if you do some searching.
    Has Bubblegum ever had problems from passing bone chips? I think Jessie may have had trouble because the chips from a thick walled bone like a marrow bone could be harder to digest. She can't have chicken bones because of her food allergies and I worry too much to give her the type of bones that she can consume anyway.

Bubblegum hasn't had trouble with passing bones. But she did have trouble with her teeth once after chewing a lot on them. I only want them for her teeth but she ended up with swelling in her mouth which may or may not have been a bone.  So I just haven't givin her many since. She does get raw chicken neck bones when my friend or I make a whole chicken or soup.    But they are small for a Dane.
Bubby is pretty good about chewing things up IF its not in her dinner bowl,,where she thinks she has to eat in a hurry.

dyan, I'd be a lot more concerned about giving a piece of rawhide than giving a chicken wing; rawhide is simply not digestible and may end up causing a bowel obstruction or choking. Not to mention it is often laden with carcinogens. Take a raw chicken wing and fiddle with it-- you'll see how flexible and soft the bones are. Drop a raw chicken wing in some acid to simulate a dog's stomach, and watch the bones turn into a rubbery substance. Although, I would think a chicken wing wouldn't do much for a dog the size of a great dane, who would probably just swallow it whole.  I think the shearing action of teeth through meat is very good at cleaning teeth-- perhaps you could just get a big hunk of boneless meat and try that.

I don't give her rawhides!   My sister brought her one for Christmas which I let her chew on for about 1/2 hour then took it from her. I used to give them to my other dogs and one used to gag all the time on them. But CET chews are not rawhides, right???  
 
I'm thinking chicken wings are so very small that if she swallows one, TROUBLE!   Bigger chicken bones like legs seem so hard.  
 
 
 

dyan have you tried chicken quarters. Since you have a big fur kid there I wouldn't trust a chicken wing.

actually Dyan I've seen my great danes swallow entire chicken legs, wings, even a entire small rabbit, fur and all,  in one gulp, no problem, got digested just fine. I don't bother to give them chicken wings cause I want them to chew a little to clean the teeth and wings just go down whole. Try a whole chicken. Or a big chunk of raw beef/pork with a bone in it-- they won't actually eat the bone, but will happily peel the meat off it, lots of teeth cleaning action.

 Dyan, They are rawhide, here's the first three ingredients; Beefhide, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed poultry liver. They're made by Virbac. I watched Jessie chew hers and after half an hour most of it was still left; it really surprised me that a thin piece of rawhide could be that durable; she will chew up a large retriever roll in less time than that. I think it's processed differently than other rawhides. By the way, I said I got Jessie the medium size; I looked at the package this morning and it's the large size so you definitely want to get extra large for Bubblegum. As far as dropping a chicken wing in acid to simulate a dog's stomach; the notion that a dog's stomach acid is stronger than ours is incorrect; the acid in their stomach is the same ph as ours but since so many are fed bones and do fine I know they digest them anyway.

I WAS looking at backs once,,,,,I could actually afford a package of them,,,but then I talked myself out of it.
Are THEY a bad idea?
I liked the necks  and she does chew them,,if only they were bigger. I give her turkey necks but cut them up instead of the whole thing at one time. But its a long time to Thanksgiving!!!  LOL!
