Cooked Pork Chop Bones?

    Cooked Pork Chop Bones?

    Good morning,
last night my family had pork chops for dinner and there was some debate as to whether or not we could give her the leftover bones from the porkchops. They were cooked in the oven and still had some meat left on them. Is it ok to give her the leftover bones or is it some kind of choking hazard?
    Thanks! [:)]

Cooked bones are known to splinter easily causing digestive trouble for some dogs.  Its usually not advised to give any cooked bones, only raw.

Absolutely NOT.  Heat, of any kind, damages the molecular structure of bones, causing them to be more likely to splinter.  So then you have an internal damage hazzard.

Now RAW bones are fine...the cooked ones can be deadly.

IMO, you "could" give them as many people do and cooked bones are even sold in stores, BUT they do cause a choking hazard and its much better to avoid taking that chance and using raw bones instead.  With any bone, just make sure you are around to supervise.

With my big dogs, I find that even the raw pork chop bones are a just a bit too small and likely to be swallowed in too large of a piece.  I also found that even raw, they splintered.

Anyone who KNOWINGLY gives cooked bones to their dogs is risking the animals very LIFE.  This is foolhardy.  Choking isn't the BIG problem.....splintering bones that pierce their innards ARE.

Several yeras ago I was at the vet, I am thinking with kayCee to get her splint off or stitches out after knee surgery, and was back in the work area with her.  On a ttable was a chocolate lab puppy, temp 107, almost in coma.  They wre really working on him.  later learned he died.  He had eaten a pork chop, it splinter, punctured his stomach and peritonitis had set had.  I did not ask, but had always assumed it was cooked.  After seeing that, I have not been able to bring myself to give any of my dogs a bone of anykind.
