Has anyone noticed the Lassie endorsed food at Kroger?

Speaking of the decent food at Walmart (which I've yet to see in person), I was in Kroger today and I saw this (possibly new) "natural" Lassie endorsed (I couldn't find a brand) kibble that actually wasn't bad. I'm pretty sure there's no BHA/BHT, ethoxyquin, etc. It looks to me like it's comparable to Nutro (it unfortunately has poultry fat, but does have chicken meal instead of chicken, etc.). It seems pretty good for a grocery store brand at $5.99 for 5 lbs.

There is no Kroger down here.  One chain has a monopoly in this area.  Well, there are super walmarts where you can get food, but outside of that one chain of grocery store, HEB.

If that Kroger food is $1.20 per pound, it's cheaper to buy Nutro, at approx 85 cents per pound, if the foods are truly comparable. Nutro Max would be even cheaper than the formula I buy.

Well, I googled "Lassie endorsed" and came up with one result. [linkhttp://www.gforceinternational.com/downloads/Lassie_Brochure.pdf#search=%27lassie%20endorsed%27]http://www.gforceinternational.com/downloads/Lassie_Brochure.pdf[/link] (Adobe Acrobat file)

That brochure talks about Maxximum Nutrition as being Lassie endorsed. Apparently Lassie has a whole line of products out. But I think Maxximum Nutrition is a Wal-Mart brand so this may not be what you're talking about. Anyway, here's the ingredients to one of the MN formulas.

Chicken, brewers rice, whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), whole grain wheat, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), animal digest, chicken cartilage (natural source of glucosamine), dicalcium phosphate, salt, malted barley flour, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, copper sulfate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

sooner, I don't think that is the same food.  The one at Kroger is called "Nature's way" or something and has Lassie's name on it.   I do remember the ingredients being high in grains, but it had no by-products, and no harmful preservatives.  I actually have a friend who is very "financially troubled" who was feeding Authority, and I had her switch to this one because of the absence of corn gluten meal (as seen in the Authority Chicken)...and it's cheaper!

Ron- It probably is cheaper to feed Nutro, but not everyone goes to pet stores to get pet food. Maybe someone that's feeding Dog Chow or something will pick this up instead. Also, the more you buy, the cheaper it is, so the food in the 5 lb bags will be more expensive per pound than if you bought the same food in, say, a 40 lb bag. (I haven't seen Nutro in a 5 lb bag, although I haven't looked; and I'm not sure but I'd guess this Kroger food comes in bigger bags.)

Sooner- I tried to look for an ingredient list, but I didn't find one. The stuff at Kroger doesn't have poultry by products or brewers rice (I think it has ground brown rice), so I don't think that's it.

Papillon- That could be the stuff, I'm not sure.

When I looked at it, the first thing I also thought of was Nutro Natural Choice, the recipe was very similar. Regular price is $16.99 for a 20 lbs bag.

I have not seen that but we have King Soopers owned by Kroger and I saw Disney's "Old Yeller" food, 15.00 for 40 lbs.

The ingredients were so bad, I thought it was kind of ironic considering the ending of the movie old Yeller.

I saw it at Publix, next to the Beneful, and was pretty impressed with the ingredients, for something at a grocery store.

My point was, as will be the point of others here, it is cheaper to buy in bulk and you don't have to spend a lot. On average, I pay about $36 for a 40 # bag. When it's on sale, I pay about $32. If I had to choose between dog food and internet connection, I'll drop off the net and buy the food. OTOH, I'm sure the food you're describing is good.  I would buy the brand that I buy, regardless of the price, because my dog does well on it.
