    Hi All!

I'm looking for website recommendations for raw diets.  I'm working out what it would cost and the logistics involved and I'm looking for more information.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks so much!

    Hi,

Barfworld.com has good info...also onlynaturalpet.com...there is a book that is a must have if you are going to feed raw or want to learn about it.  The name of it is:
Dr.  Pictairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats.  When I made the decision to have a dog, I read everything I could about the pros and cons of dry food and raw food and decided to go with raw.  I have had Romeo for two years, and feeding raw at least for us was the best decision I could have made.  The vet cannot believe when I take Romeo to visit, that he is the same dog that I took in 2 years ago, after I adopted him from CAP shelter in Houston.  I am a true believer, I like knowing that what my dog is eating, wholesome natural ingredients, that I could consume myself, well except for the raw bones, but he gets ground chicken with veggies and fruit, turkey, pork, beef, venison, etc,  and yogurt always yogurt, the plain low fat king with live bacteria.  Good luck, let me know if the info helped.

silver_wlf- OT, but I love the avatar pic of your Dobe. He's beautiful! My grandparents bred them when my dad was young, I love the breed.

Do you do any competing of any sort with him?

Thanks!!  I compete in Obedience trials and we're hoping to try our first tracking trial sometime this summer.  I haven't got into Agility yet - mostly because there's no one around here that trains.  (I'd have an hour drive to go to class .. and with gas prices ... )

I always wanted a dobe and we adopted him last year from Second Chance Dobes in Michigan.  He's a wonderful dog and has spoiled me for any other breed.  What a sweetheart!! [:)]

It is great if you could also find a DVM that is familiar with raw feeding and approves of it.  That may be difficult for you to find in your area, but I know that our DVM has been a great help when we had questions or concerns, she even has recipe's!  She is a student of Pitcairn which means she developed her recipes based on his seaminars and book.  We have been feeding raw for about 2 years now, so we tweak the dogs diets depending on their stools, activity level, and general health.  But I really like the fact that I can openly discuss our diet choice with our DVM.  So you may want to look around!

I forgot to mention there is another web site also: b-naturals.com...lew olson I believe is the owner and is great if you email her asking for advice.  I have a couple of times and she is great.

Awesome!  Thanks everyone for the resources!!  I've ordered a couple books on the list.  Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog was mentioned to me by another lady in my obedience class.  From the write-up on Amazon it looks like it's really comprehensive.

Apparently my vet isn't anti-raw but I don't think he advocates for it either.  The lady in my class also uses him and said that he wasn't against what she was doing.  So I guess that's a step forward.

    Thanks again so much!!

[linkhttp://www.rawdogranch.com/index.html]http://www.rawdogranch.com/index.html[/link] is a site I'm using to make sure I'm doing things right. It's the best described one I've found so far (and it includes pictures)

Actually - I've been spending a lot of time there myself over the past couple weeks.  I have to get up the guts to go into the butcher and ask for some of this stuff....

For you that do feed raw ... is it possible (and not totally financially crippling) to do without a chest freezer?  Or is it pretty much a necessity to buy in bulk?  (We don't have a large freezer - but I could probably dump stuff in my sister's freezer...)

    BTW - Aussie_Dog - that sig quote is awesome!![:D]

Stef, the best I do is a couple raw meals per week.  Dinner the other days is homecooked and I honestly could NOT live without a freezer.  In fact, my dogs have their OWN deep freeze.

Thanks Glenmar - that's kinda what I figured.

Do butchers look at you like you're crazy when you walk in ordering cases of things?  (I'm a vegetarian - so I don't buy meat in any form ... let alone in a case! *laughing*  However - I have no issue handling it.)

They tend to look at you a little wierd when you ask for heart!  One grocery carries great pork hocks and chicken livers, another good long marrow bones and I travel for marrow bones.  I tend to buy chicken leg quarters whenever someone has them on sale for 29 cents a lb for the 10 lb bags......I'll buy 10 or 15 bags.  The state I live in has some really strict meat packing laws so meat is expensive here, but I'm looking at a BARF group as a source for at least some of their meals.  I've not done all the research I need to do tho yet in order to feed them safely at this point.
