impressed with Eukanuba

    impressed with Eukanuba

So last week I stopped to pick up our big bag of Eagle Pack original.  The dogs have been on it for a few months and do okay.  Their poop is a tad mushy at times and very LARGE and really that is my only complaint.  My Pet Supplies Plus was totally out and only had the Lamb Super Premium or the Holistic (dogs didn't like it) so I grabbed a small bag of Eukanuba Labrador.  I was ready for diahrea or at least gas but there was nothing and the dogs love it (very pricey however) so I probably will go back to eagle because of reputation and dollars but I'm glad there is a back up I can use successfully.

Eukanuba is a good food and there are some members who feed it. Jessie had soft mushy stools on it and has small firm stools on Eagle Pack but she gets the Holistic foods not the original.

Some people really like Eukanuba, but I've had better results with EP Holistic. If you decide to try EP again I definitely recommend the holistic line rather than the original. Which holistic formula did you try that your dogs didn't like? Gingerbread (my picky one) seems to like the Duck Meal & Oatmeal best, followed closely by Chicken Meal & Rice.

And see, my one venture into EPH resulted in very large, mushy stools.  Yet mine did GREAT on Innova.

I think that the bottom line is that NO food is great for every single dog.  If I HAD to pick between Euk and Canidae, Canidae would win hands down.  But, that's because of my experience with the food.  EPG wouldn't be a choice for me, but again, that's from my own personal experience.  Soft and mushy just flat doesn't cut it with SIX large dogs.

My only beef with Eukanuba is the prominence of by-products as the main protein source.  Organs and byproducts should be in a smaller ;proportion than muscle meat.  Otherwise I would not at all be opposed to adding it to the rotation.  I like the fact that all of the protein is meat based (no grain gluten meals) and does not use chemical preservatives.

we'v tried the ep duck and oatmeal and actually it was just one dog who hated it and we tried the anchovy sardine one which I couldn't take the smell of and really they both were reluctant eaters on it.  They were gassy on the duck but not the fish one and had messy poop most of the time (I transitioned for 3 weeks) I thought maybe it was one of the holistic ingredients so we tried the premium version original and they do pretty good on it.  I may rotate with the Eukanuba Labrador although one of my dogs is not a lab but loved it and did well on it last week.  I think these breed specific foods may be a gimmick andt the ingredients look pretty good for any breed; 23% protein and 13% fat.

Eukanuba, is a pretty poor food. Grain heavy, filled with poor ingredients, and it is like feeding your dog a diet of fast food.  Look at some of the good brands like:

    Canidae,
    EVO
    Natural Balance
    Timberwolf
    Innova

Grain and chicken by-products...... not good...

Eagle pack is better is a bit better because it has meat meals before the grains instead of meat, but if this particular dog does better on Eukanuba, then the Eukanuba IS better for THIS dog.

As for by-products and grain being not good in general, thats a matter of opinion...

On the Euk Lab just going on week 2, their coat and poop never looked better.  Misskiwi is right, it works for some.

Weve had dogs on Euk for years now and i love the results. Right now i wouldnt go with anythig else

While Euk's ingredient list may never win in a dog food "bench show," I've ALWAYS been happy with the real-life performance of Euk. These guys actually test their foods, do studies, and are generally at the front-line when it comes to honest-to-goodness scientifically-based nutritional research. They actually test their foods rather than assuming they're better because the ingredients "look" better. They were balancing Omega 6 & 3 fatty acids and formulating high protein, low calcium large breed puppy foods before many of the ultra-premium foods on the market now even existed. I love how many of these newer foods claim they'll add years to your dog's life, yet many haven't even been around as long as my last dog!

I feed Canidae now because I get slightly better results for slightly less money. My sister still feeds Euk to her crew afteer trying everything from Steve's Real Food to Innova. In the end, Euk has always been the best for her dogs in perforfamance and availablity. But I would feed Euk again with no qualms. And if I needed a veterinary diet, I'd feed Euk WAY before I'd feed Science Diet.

So does Natura (Innova & California Natural) - they have their own 11,000 square foot research and testing facility
