I want to change foods, but to what??

I want to change foods, but to what??

I am looking for a new food for my dog, Trinity. I have been feeding her Nutro large breed, but lately she has started pulling her hair out again. I know that corn is a trigger, so I would like to find something with as little as possible, or even better, none at all. I also feed her homecooked stews, that she gets 3-4x a week. Cost is a factor, and I can't afford super premium brands, but am absolutley not willing to feed her grocery store brands. I also have a very limited choice in my tiny little town, so a list I can print out and look for would be ideal. There is one feed store in town, and one pet store. The eagle pack here is about $75 a bag, which is way out of my price range, and the nutro I currently buy is about $45 a bag, just to give a price comparison.
Thanks for any help and advice you guys can give

Does the feed store sell Innova EVO?  That is their new food with no grains at all.

Here are two excellent lists to get you started. I personally would start by looking for Canidae. I (Oklahoma City) buy 40 lbs for $30.95 and the ingredients are as good or better than anything else out there. Good luck with your hunt!

I don't know anything about whether the food has corn, but Timberwolf Organics ships for free and is much cheaper than what you mentioned.  It is also a good quality food.

I think food here is a lot cheaper than by you, so getting it shipped may be your best bet.  I think dog.com sells Wellness and Solid Gold too which is supposed to be good I think.

Regardless of what you choose, I get the impression it is very expensive by you because it is a small town, so shipping may be your best bet!

Stacy, who ships TO for free?

Here are some other good online buying sites...

Hold out for the good coupon codes for petfooddirect. If you do the register to win free food afterwards it will pop up with a code good for 13-20% off. ;PFD060320E is a code I got today for 20%. CJ15 is good for 5% off at Only Natural Pet.

Their web site said free shipping to the 48 contiguous US.  I happened to be looking at their web site yesterday because locally I can't find TO, but I hate paying for shipping (still waiting for free shipping on dog.com hehe).

That's interesting, I wonder if they started that after the price hike? Their shipping always was reasonable anyway. Last time I ordered I paid $8.80 for 33 lbs.

I'm still waiting on dog.com's too. Was she just teasing us?? I have a whole shopping list of new toys Boomer *needs* [;)].

I forgot to say that I am canadian, so that should help you understand the pricing a little...
I am right now frolicking through the sites you all have refered me to, a few of them I have been looking at just last night. Great Dane lady's site is one I refer many people to, trying to urge them to change their dogs food from purina, and kibbles & bits.
Just to make things more complicated, I do not have a credit card, but do use paypal...
anywho I am going to finish reading, then I'll come back here and see if there are any more replies. I am wanting to buy her some food today, as it's payday lol.

I decided to go with Canidae, from all the good things I have read on this forum about it. It was only a few dollars more than Nutro, too.
She could hardly wait to eat it, even the cat had to have a few kibbles of it, and she hates dog food, I thought. It's got to be a good sign[:)]. Right now she is nose deep in her bowl crunching away, she seems very happy, now just to see if it stops/helps the itchiness.
I like how it says it's for all stages of life, I have read that puppy and senior kibble is just a way to get more money from people. She has an estrogen defiency, and due to it, somedays it gets the best of her, and she becomes depressed. Taking her out to exercise helps, so I walk her alot. The bag says it's good for high energy dogs, and that really appealed to me. I feel better knowing that the energy she burns is being replaced.
So much change for all my animals this week, a new UVB bulb for my iguana, and new food for Trin!![:D]

Great!  I hope it works out well.  I am thinking about doing a rotation... a few months Innova (what I feed now) and a few months Canidae :).

Yay! Hope you're as happy as we are with it!

Now I know why the prices at TO went up by $10+ per bag.
