Baby food

    Baby food

Today I bought some meat baby food for a topper. Its Gerber Turkey and turkey gravy and Chicken and chicken gravy. The ingredients are ground turkey, water and corn starch and the other jar is chicken, water and corn starch.

The jars are 78 cents each and are 2.5 OZ. So I though it it is ok to feed her this I would add a little water to make a gravy to put on her kibble to make the jar last longer.

I made her some hamb, maccroni, and vegs - carrots and green beans Sunday. I put it in the blender to make it more liked canned dog food and she hated it. She liked the batch I made her before not blended up + I left out the green beens. Either she hates green beens or she doen`t like it mushed up.?????

So I spent Sunday cooking for our cat I guess. Tom will eat anything.

Question - Is the baby food ok for a topper?

Yup, it's perfectly fine as long as it doesn't have onion flavoring. I've used meat babyfood as a topper on Gingerbread's food many times!

Luvntzus - Thanks for the reply. Molly got some of the baby food with her kibble and tonight she loved it. Nice to know that I can use the baby food in a pinch as a topping. I`m not going to use canned dog food until the recall thing is over. Thanks again.

You might want to double check the label on that baby food.  I'm ;pretty sure that Gerber uses onion powder in their meats with gravy.  Beechnut meats do not have onion powder in them.

From experience, my dogs prefer a natural, chunky texture and hate it when I blend their food, too.

If they do use onion power in some jars its not on the list of ingredients on the jars that I bought. Ingredients - Ground turkey, water and corn starch. Thats it for ingredients. The other jar - Ground chicken, water and corn starch. Again thats it for the ingredients.

That's great news!  Gerber has a much better selection of meats but I've been sticking with Beechnut (only 3 varieties) because all the Gerber had onion powder in it.  I was just at the grocery store today and checked the gerber just to make sure and it did have onion powder.  This must mean they finally changed their formula, which would be great, or maybe there's a line I haven't discovered yet.  My local grocery store carries their organic and regular line but I'll have to keep an eye out now and maybe check a different grocrey store, too.  Thanks for the heads up!  Now maybe my puppies can have some lamb in their kongs!

I don't use the ground meats, but I've used Gerber chicken sticks as treats for years and as far as I know there have been no ill effects.

I know that onions are a no no and avoid them, but the amount of onion powder in the chicken sticks is so far down the list that there can't be more than a dash in there....which I know may be an issue with some dogs.

I'm very lucky...Nemo seems to be healthy as a horse and as happy as a lark.  So if something is wrong I guess I'll find out after bloodwork at the vet later this month.

The sound the baby food jar lid makes when it's popped is better than a dog whistle.  Nemo will be at my feet sitting pretty without a word being said no matter what he was doing 5 seconds earlier...lol

aren't those chicken sticks loaded with sodium ?
    • Gold Top Dog
I didn`t get the sticks. Just the baby food jars.

Gerber 2nd Foods - Meats come in many varieties (flavors), in 2.5oz jars.

    Chicken & Chicken Gravy
    Turkey & Turkey Gravy
    Lamb & Lamb Gravy
    Beef & Beef Gravy
    Veal & Veal Gravy
    Ham & Ham Gravy

Ingredients from the labels of three of the jars:

"Chicken & Chicken Gravy: Ingredients, Ground Chicken, Water and corn starch."

"Turkey & Turkey Gravy: Ingredients, Ground Turkey, Water and corn starch."

Lamb & Lamb Gravy: Ingredients, Lamb, water, corn starch and lemon juice concentrate (to maintain natural color).

I do have another question though. Is it all right to use the baby food with lemon juice concentrate in it??

Sodium is a necessary nutrient when your dog is active. There's a lot in Gatorade and Pedialyte, too, which are both often given to dogs that are ill or stressed.

I'd never worry about the few bites my dog got in a chicken stick. I used to use these as bait for flyball practice too - they are great and come in handy little jars unlike hot dogs, and much healthier than a hot dog. Trim would eat about three jars over the course of a weekend.

    I always feed Raji babyfood.

She gets the BeachNut ones because they have less ingredients in them and they do not have modifyed food starch (most of them) or onion powder.

I give her the chicken and veggies ones or the Chicken and Rice and a few other ones. She has always done fine with them, and she has a sensitive tummy

I use the Gerber "meat" sticks that are made with pork and beef.  They use garlic powder instead of onion powder in them.  They make the best Kong stuffers for the small size kongs!  They also smoosh up easily and are a huge hit when mushed into a Kong puppy teething stick or the balls with ridges.
In general, I stick to Beechnut, though.  I like the fact that they don't use modified cornstarch like Raja posted.
