Multivitamin question

    Multivitamin question

    Hi there.

Well, Willow was pleased with her rice and Evanger's beef mix yesterday.
Now, I remember giving her a multi vitamin years ago when I cooked for her.  But, it was for dogs.  Now, I'm reading a lot of suggestions that it should be a human vitamin.

But, she's only 50 lbs.  So, would I use a children's vitamin??  It seems like she's too small for an adult vitamin.

    Thanks.

I use an adult vitamin, but only three times a week. What I used to do was get children's chewables and give half of one each day, but now I prefer to avoid the artificial colors and flavors in them. The "complete" multis have about the same amount of vitamins and minerals regardless of whether they are for children or adults.

    Thanks.
I'm just still on the fence of whether I want to use a doggie vitamin for her or not?  Aren't there a lot of good quality dog vitamins?

Thanks, again, it's been so long since I did this.  I used to just use different dog vitamins.  I switched around a lot.

If you're interested, I answered about what I use (human grade stuff, but made for dogs) in the homecooking-organ meat thread.

Yes, there are.  I don't use them, though, so I can't help you there. IMO, you do need to make sure they include the right nutrients in the right amounts, whatever type you choose.

In Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets by Strombeck, he has a chart showing the percentage of a human multi-vitamin that should be given to dogs of certain weights.  The chart doesn't specifically list a 50-pound dog, but it says a 45-pound dog should get 30% of a human vitamin, and a 60-pound dog should get 40% of a human vitamin.

The idea he's getting across is that human vitamins are formulated for people weighing 150 pounds, so you figure out what percentage of a human vitamin a dog needs by comparing the dog's weight to 150 pounds.  So based on that formula, a 50-pound dog would need one-third of a human vitamin.

The % of weight thing doesn't work very well when you have a 15 lb dog; 1/10th of a human vitamin would be pretty difficult to measure LOL.  Guess I'm staying with doggie vitamins.  I just bought one today, its made by Nutrition Now (who also make human vitamins).   I was able to get my recipes to be fairly decent once I add 1 tablet in per day.

Yeah, that's my thoughts on this too.  I want this to be easy and user friendly not crazy difficult trying to cut up hard vitamins in the morning.  Willow and I are dieting.  So, we want easy, quick, we don't want to focus our time on food.
