    Canine Caveir - new recall

Canine Caviar is voluntarily recalling less than 1500 cans in circulation nationally (not cases) and expects to have this collected within 48 hours of April 27, 2007. This unexpected situation is due to the fact that our canned food co-packer was using ingredients that were not authorized by Canine Caviar.

We are voluntarily recalling the following three can SKU's:

    13.2 oz Gourmet Turkey - UPC 674555222134
    13.2 oz Gourmet Beaver - UPC 674555221328
    5.5 oz Gourmet Beaver - UPC 674555221557

dated best by Aug 21, 08 or later
All of the Gourmet Duck and Venison Tripe in the 13.2 oz cans are made to our standards, do not contain grains and are not part of this voluntary recall.

During the next few weeks, Canine Caviar will be out of stock on these three cans and recommends using the canned duck or venison tripe.

CANINE CAVIAR'S DRY FOODS, TREATS OR SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL.  THESE PRODUCTS ARE PACKED AT A DIFFERENT FACILITY.  WE HAVE WRITTEN DOCUMTATION PROVING THESE PRODUCTS ARE MANUFACTURED TO OUR STANDARDS.

We apologize and have taken steps to increase quality control to ensure this does not happen in the future, we are demanding production records from all or our co-packers for all of our formulas before they are shipped to us. We have reviewed all of our other products and determined that they are free of any unauthorized ingredients.

There have been no illnesses reported related to feeding these formulas, however, to comply with the American Nutrition recall of the two products, we are voluntarily pulling all dates and batches of these two formulas.

Please return all cans of turkey and beaver to your store for a full refund.

Please email Canine Caviar at [link;p=http%3A%2F%2Fb6.mail.yahoo.com%2Fym%2Fcaninecaviar.com%2FCompose%3FTo%3Dinfo%40caninecaviar.com]info@caninecaviar.com[/link]>http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=8pcqh4bab.0.5e5rh4bab.d9mha5bab.815&ts=S0237&;p=http%3A%2F%2Fb6.mail.yahoo.com%2Fym%2Fcaninecaviar.com%2FCompose%3FTo%3Dinfo%40caninecaviar.com]info@caninecaviar.com[/link][size=3] for free dry food and treat coupons for this inconvenience.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to add that I just got the above emailed to me

This has already been posted Cathy, but thanks. The really scary part is that most of us thought that the grain free canned foods were safe, but the beaver and turkey are just meat and water. I'm cooking all of Jessie's kibble toppers for at least the next few weeks.

I'm glad to have a thread with Canine Caviar in the title - I think there are some people here who use the beaver.

These were supposed to be grain-free meat cans.

Now I know why I was uncomfortable with the companies that wouldn't disclose their manufacturers. It would be great just to have a list of foods produced by American Nutrition or (insert company name here) to avoid, rather than waiting to find out there's more to come.

So far, and note I say  SO FAR I am so thankful i have used only Purina One dry along with home cooked or canned (human) salmon, mackeral, and unsalted veggies for my dogs.  They were getting meds in solid packed food which so far has not  been recalled for meatballs for their sups., but i make mashed potato balls for their sups now. They got very little of the canned and they are large dogs..

Since I don't rotate i do not have bags and cans of recalled food sitting around. I don't have to worry about what my dogs ate last week or the week before. Of couse all this could change tomorrow, but for the moment I am just happy I stuck with what i had used for 50 years..

Thank you for posting this.  I passed it on to a friend that feeds Canine Caviar.

Sorry for those who've already seen this.  I know the recall info is getting tiresome and reading repetitive posts makes it worse, but I had to post quick because I'm at work, and wasn't sure anyone had seen this.  This is the most surprising part of the recall so far for me.  I would've thought these meat-only canned foods would've been safer than anything else and had seriously thought about switching to it.  I knew things were going to keep getting worse when it all first started, but now I'm wondering when and where it's going to end [8|]

Well, I'll be waiting to see Timberwolf here, soon.
Except, I BET that we won't be finding out (if their food ends up contaminated) until a while from now.
Do you suspect that these companies KNOW their foods are contaminated and are holding out until they HAVE TO "voluntarily" recall their foods, or do you think they are testing their foods and it just takes a while to get the results?

I would suspect my first option/question/idea. But I'm not sure.

Many of these foods say in their press releases that they don't have test results yet, and they're doing this as a precaution. They're doing it as they are forced to, when the information about their contracted facility becomes public. I'm actually surprised we didn't see more recalls out of Chenango - still waiting for the other shoe to drop there.
    • Gold Top Dog
didn't you say you thought Chenango manufactured Timberwolf?
    • Gold Top Dog
That has been posted on several boards, by several different people, but TO has neither confirmed or denied.

How did people get that information if T.O. won't budge on their manufacturer?
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't know. It was mentioned on ODO so I Googled Timberwolf + Chenango and it brought up a bunch of discussions on boards I've never been to. I didn't see anything that said the source, but I didn't look to hard either.
