Has anyone had experiences with trying to return recalled food?

I called before trying to return recalled food. At first they (Petco) said just to bring it back - then I said it was open and was put on hold - they came back and said they'd take it back with a receipt (which I had). So I returned a 40 lb bag that only had about 10 lbs left in it. If the manufacturer is reimbursing the distributor for the recalled product I want them to get hit with every penny possible.

That was dry food though. If it was a case of cans it should be easier since cans are sold separately anyway.

Why would a company add an extra ingredient, wouldn't it make more sense to save the money and leave it out?

Because the rice protein concentrate is cheaper than the meat/meat meal.  The manufacturer can sub and the purchasing company (when doing random quality tests) will still see their correct protein percentage.  It would be delibrate, despicable and deceiving but hey - it makes a profit so must be all right.

I have my baby at the vets now who was fed the Blue canned.  I had better see them sue ANI for this or I will not believe that Blue did not know this was going on.

I just returned my cans to Petsmart without a receipt and there was no problem.  I don't have the dry food bag any longer, as the food was transferred to a storage container.  But I do believe I am headed online to order TWO grain-free.

In this case that other place must have sneaked over and put that rice stuff in the food at BB plant--they do say their food is not produced by any other company..Now why would they do that?  Or BBas not been quite honest as to where their food is made and by who.

This is all a matter of economics.  It is prohibitively expensive for smaller companies to own their own wet food factories and it seems now that it's coming out, to be rather matter of course for them to contract that out.  The company contracted seems to have been adding rice protein in order to cut cost corners and boost their own profits at the expense of those folks (companies) who put their faith in them.

Blue is likely going to sue and I've heard murmers that the other affected companies are as well.  DS had an hour and 20 minute conference call today and legal was even on the line telling them that right now it is NOT safe to recommend ANY canned food because they just flat do not know what other brands are affected.

Blue has extensively tested their canned foods and have found NO melamine in any of the tested product.  But still, they are recalling to be safe.  The kibble that hasn't been recalled has been even more extensively tested.  The kibble is produced by a different company altogether and is actually a HUMAN bakery that is rated at the top of whatever human bakeries get rated by....master facility?  Whoever said they were gonna trash a 30 lb bag, don't.  Take it back to the store.  Blue stands behind their products and offers a full refund even without the receipts.  I understand that the company owner is even taking phone calls from concerned pet parents.

I'm gonna keep Blue in my rotation.  And ya'll know how hard I am to satisfy when it comes to kibble.

Grin, I am glad to know that they are recalling to be safe...I knew that.  I still feel fairly comfortable using their dry for now.  I did go out today to get some things to top off my dog
food...will cook it tomorrow...canned is out of the question at this point.

I'm gonna use your recipe now, finally....

I know some stuff that I can't share right now....once it hits the press I can confirm that it isn't gossip tho!

I do know that Blue immediately dumped AN.........and with this many companies claiming that they didn't have a clue, well, I believe them.  And I hope all those dupped companies sue the pants off AN and put them out of business.  Probably impossible to get to the initial suppliers in China, but by danged can't we at least start TESTING the crap we import from them??

    2 things:

Has anyone mentioned the Blue Buffalo and NB health bar treats  have been recalled as well?   I just got on tonight, so haven't caught up or have time to right now as I still have to feed a walk the guys.

Second thing, a few days ago, I subscribed to get all govt recall notices - about anything, not just food.  The one tongiht said that Blue Buffalo recalls products due to tampering by American Nutrition. (really sad for such crappy people to use such a good name for a company).  Anyway, I thought it was interesting that the put in there "due to tampering".

Yep, on the Blue treats.  I dunno on the others.

If you're up for it... the best home-made diet for cats is actually ground up small prey. You can order whole animals like rats, quail and rabbits (snake food) online, and have them shipped frozen to your door. Then you grind them up in a meat grinder and you have the perfect, home-made, balanced diet for cats.

A holistic vet near here offers this frozen diet as a service to his clients, and I think its the greatest idea ever!

I've actually thought of that, but hadn't made the leap yet. My ferrets are on a raw diet, consisting primarily of mice and day old chicks- not ground up though, they get them whole. Now that I think about it, ferret nutritional requirements are ;pretty similar to cat nutritional requirements...I know ferrets need more protein than cats, but based on what I've been reading, there really aren't that many differences. Gosh, I feel dumb! [sm=smack.gif] So giving my cat a raw diet wouldn't be any harder than doing it for my ferrets, which I've been doing for months now.

Well, looks like I need to order some more mice and chicks. Between the ferrets, and the snake, and now the CAT...my freezer is going to be full of dead rodents![8D]

Here's a press release from Blue Buffalo... it explains quite a bit.

This is from the Mulligan Stew site: American Nutrition has stated they added very small quantities of rice protein to our chicken and turkey formulas in order to increase the protein levels. This rice protein introduction is a direct violation of our patented formula and was done without our knowledge or consent.

How do you know that the Rats don't have rabies?
