[linkhttp://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/04/24/tuesday/index.html]FDA will begin testing for melamine in the human food supply[/link] after investigating chicken farms and the expansion of tainted pork. This is more than a month after the first pet food recall was announced.
    [blockquote]
In addition, the FDA on Tuesday announced plans to expand testing of the animal food supply after hogs on farms in three states were quarantined after testing positive for the substance at the center of the recall, the toxic agent melamine.
A poultry farm in Missouri is also being investigated, federal officials said.

Looks like you and I posted the same information about the same time. I guess we'll be avoiding chicken and pork for awhile.[:@]

My dog is allergic to chicken so I don't have to worry about it so much here (my freezer is packed with wild game for myself).  There doesn't seem to be an end to this nightmare.

We ALL knew it was just a matter of time before this affected human food. If animals eat the grain that was contaminated, then the animal becomes contaminated, if we eat the animal that's contaminated, then...VOILA! We're sick as well, right?

And are you aware of all the hormones that go into the livestock destined for slaughter/milk production?  Lol, I like meat too much to stop eating it and am not going to overreact in this situation.  I shoot most of my food and trade off extras with a friend of the family that ranches for homegrown beef and buffalo with the occassional pork and lamb.

Has anyone actually stated that it works that way?  Animals eat things tht are toxic to you and I all the time, but it's not passed to the muscle tissue, so we don't consume the toxin. Has there been any evidence that the melamine is passed into the muscle tissue in amounts toxic to humans?

I haven't seen anything on it, that's why I asked. In one way it makes sense, in your way it doesn't.
But, if it wasn't a concern, then why are they bothering making a big deal out of it? Could dogs or cats be affected if they eat the tainted chicken or pork?

         They haven't done much research on this;   [linkhttp://www.capitalpress.info/main.asp?SectionID=94&SubSectionID=801&ArticleID=31858&TM=27885.52]http://www.capitalpress.info/main.asp?SectionID=94&SubSectionID=801&ArticleID=31858&TM=27885.52[/link];

"There is really very little known about melamine and its retention in meat and what the risks might be so we wanted to look at tissues," he said. "Our toxicologists are now working to determine if there are any detectable levels in tissues such as muscle, liver and kidneys, so that work is ongoing."

I'm avoiding these foods for my family until things settle.

I read this on MSNBC, I didn't check if it was in the Reuters release:

[blockquote]The California Agriculture Department said separately it was trying to contact 50 people who bought pork that may have come from pigs fed food containing melamine. The state#%92s health department recommended humans not consume the meat, but said any health risk was minimal.
There is little research on melamine#%92s effect on humans, according to World Health Organization, but the chemical has been studied in animals for its risk of kidney problems and cancer. The WHO does not classify the chemical as a carcinogen for people.

The WHO does not classify the chemical as a carcinogen for people.

The problem here is that it was probably classified as not a "contact" carcinogen.  I doubt that it has been evaluated as a "consumable" carcinogen.

If anything I would suspect that if livestock eats the tainted food, even if it has been "re-processed" it could affect the kidneys/liver(?) the same way as dogs and cats, although possibly slower.  The end result would be less toxins filtered and more toxins stored in the muscle meat which is where the human food chain would be at risk.

I gave up meat over 2yrs ago and at this point I couldn't be happier that I did so.  My only concern is the livestock that is possibly contaminated ending up in our pet food that so far is still safe.

Would organic chicken be safe; there are some grocery stores in my area that carry it.
