Xylitol??

• Xylitol?? Adam Hargis Posted : 4/20/2007 12:45:07 AM Ok, im sorry if this isnt the kind of thing this board is usually used for, but my dog ate an entire pack of trident earlier tonight.  I have read were xylitol is what is used for the artificial sweetener in this gum, and is poisoness to dogs.  We plan to take her to the vet or at least call in the morning.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Does a pack of gum contain enough to kill a dog?   Once again i apologize if this isnt the intended discussion for this board.  I am just a little worried. How long ago did he eat the gum? if it's been within an hour administer peroxide (about a tablespoon at a time) until he pukes. Make sure that the gum situation adds up. If it was longer than an hour take him in. This will act pretty fast... i wouldn't wait for the morning. So I would suggest calling your regular/local vet and they Should get back to you. I wouldn't wait till morning. And do it soon! Keep us updated! • Sera_J Posted : 4/20/2007 1:41:58 AM 50-60 is pretty good weight. .. but that's a lot of gum. Mine had half a pack and weighed about 15 lbs (a foster at the time) but I have three dogs. I had to make them all puke. The foster ended up being the culprit. I'd try the hydrogen peroxide (it is unpleasant, you may want to consider doing it outside) and in the meantime get a hold of your emergency vet. FYI i called my emergency vet and they had no idea what i was talking about. Xylitol is not widely known. If they aren't familiar, explain that it's considered toxic.... but, you unsure of what quantity is lethal. There is a lady (Jennie, where are ya?) whose dog almost died from xylitol. I'd try 2 tablespoons to start with and then one every 4-5 min until he pukes... and in the meantime get on the horn with the vet. • Adam Hargis Posted : 4/20/2007 11:43:40 AM Just an update for all of you that are curious..haha.  "Lilly" started acting very sluggish and just not herself early this morning.  It seeme as though it had just really hit her.  Right before we were taking her to the vet she started twitching a little and didnt really want to stay awake (kept rolling her eyes back).  So we rushed to the vet as soon as they opened and wouldnt ya know it the little booger started acting normal again.  Her blood surgar had apparently dropped but was on the rise again when we got her to the doctor.  He gave us a  few things to keep the blood sugar up and to help her liver motabolize the toxin easier.  Now she is fine just a little tired after the whole thing.  Now all we have to worry about are the liver problems she could possible get, but hopefully everything is fine.  Thankyou again for your help!! 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
