Has anyone seen the new "gimmick" Beneful has come up with ?

Was at WalMart tonight picking up a few things and had to go by the dogfood section to get to the gardening supplies. There in the aisle was a big display of  new Beneful " Gourmet Dinners" packaged in what looks like the throw away Glad containers in different colors. The foods look like real stews but the ingredients are still crap unfortunately.  It just makes me sick that these cheap quality big companies are trying to jump on the holistic bandwagon with these "mock" holistic foods, duping the public into thinking they're getting something healthy when it's still the same old garbage, different packaging/advertising/gimmick. Same w/the new Purina.... it's still full of poor quality fillers and junk even though it boasts no artificial preservatives ,etc.

Oh I know....it's horrible! In addition to that, have you seen the new Pedigree line that claims to be the same as giving your dog human food?? Same ingredients (corn first, BHA/BHT as preservatives) except they added chicken by-product instead of meat and bone meal...lol. Even has colored dyes to it now to make it look like "real meat and veggies."

I saw the commercial for the new Beneful last night and looked up the ingredients today.Yuck, nothing like a little wheat gluten and soy flour in your beef stew !

' NO artificial flavors or fillers'.... LMFAO  Ok... what the hell do you call  CORN as the first ingredient ?   Corn Gluten Meal ?  Wheat flour ?  Wheat Mill run ??   Big deal, what difference   does it make when you've already got  Artificial COLORS, BHA/BHT,  and Crap like Meat and Bone Meal, Animal fat .

Notice it says  WITH Chicken and Vegetables.   The FDA says  that when a product says WITH such and such it only has to have as little as something like 3%.

    Here ,  look :
The "3%" or "with" rule was originally intended to apply only to ingredients highlighted on the principal display panel, but outside the product name, in order to allow manufacturers to point out the presence of minor ingredients that were not added in sufficient quantity to merit a "dinner" claim. For example, a "Cheese Dinner," with 25% cheese, would not be feasible or economical to produce, but either a "Beef Dinner for Dogs" or "Chicken Formula Cat Food" could include a side burst "with cheese" if at least 3% cheese is added. Recent amendments to the AAFCO model regulations now allow use of the term "with" as part of the product name, too, such as "Dog Food With Beef" or "Cat Food With Chicken." Now, even a minor change in the wording of the name has a dramatic impact on the minimum amount of the named ingredient required, e.g., a can of "Cat Food With Tuna" could be confused with a can of "Tuna Cat Food," but, whereas the latter example must contain at least 95% tuna, the first needs only 3%. Therefore, the consumer must read labels carefully before purchase to ensure that the desired product is obtained.

The product on the whole is just GARBAGE, pure and simple.  I just don't get how anyone in their right mind could believe that this is 'nutritious' food by any stretch of the imagination. But then again this is EXACTLY why these companies spend so much money on advertising. They KNOW they have a crap product and what they count on is being able to turn S#@t into GOLD and the general public, as gullible as they are, buy into it. I actually find it scary to think that people are that uninformed and just oblivious to what's really going on.

At PetCo they are charging $45.99/bag for the new Purina stuff.  I wonder how many poor schmucks have already fallen for it.

All are out for the almighty dollar.  I think people should do research before buying dog food...but alot don't know they figure dog food is dog food or ooo that looks good for my dog to eat.  Plus purina and pedigree are avaiable everywhere part of it could be a convience factor.
    • Gold Top Dog
Wow, are you serious ? $45.99 ??  It's loaded w/nothing but by-products and grains.  I can't believe people will bitch about paying $30-$40 to feed a super premium but will buy that psuedo-healthy Imposter GARBAGE for that kind of money.   Convenience or not, are people just that dense ?

What I can't believe is.... WHY is there no consumer groups lobbying to have the pet food business regulated ?  WHY does the FDA allow these companies to deceive the public the way they do ? WHY does the US fall so far behind the EU and Australia and Canada in banning harmful ingredients such as chemical additives and preservatives and requiring wholesome non-contaminated ingredients  ?  In the EU things like BHA/BHT are illegal and all pet food must be made from meats and other products that have been deemed FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.      We have the absolute WEAKEST government when it comes to protecting the health of humans as well as pets and livestock. Maybe that's because these other gov'ts don't support 'special interest' groups.  ARGH.. it just makes me ill.

I saw those at Walmart, too, and looked at the ingredients and was so annoyed.  :/

Several reasons the first one being we have no laws in place against lobbying which is basically a company contributing X amount of dollars to the Senators next campaign if he votes down the bill that will effectively lose them money because they can no longer put that bullshit in their pet food. I freaking hate our government nowadays. [&:]

Purina is so deceptive, especially with their little Beneful commercials. They need to go die. They show this man telling his puppy "you only think your gettin` spoiled" and all this other crap. mmm...nothing like corn, flour, chemicals, and a shitload of food coloring!!

[sm=eek.gif] Thats more than what I pay for Innova!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Gold Top Dog
Yep, that's more than I pay for Innova too, and a big bag of Innova LASTS a week for my crew....eating it for just breakfast.  Can't imagine how many bags of CORN I'd have to buy to feed them breakfast for a week.......

When I picked up my adopted dog he was on Beneful and they sent me home with a bag.  I went to petsmart and looked at all the food there and decided to try Authority Harvest Baked Lamb.  So my dog has spent about 2 weeks in change over.  I didn't want to change to rapidly.

I agree with you on that and I think it would be great if there was a way to hand out a nutrition primer to new pet owners when they get a pet for the first time. Then, again, I wish I had a million dollars, too. I'm more likely to get the money than better education for consumers. I'm not knocking the food brands but I do agree that a better informed choice is better than an uninformed choice. I have a co-worker who's very smart on a lot of things but he buys the cheapest dog food without regard to whether it's appropriate or not.

I would beg to differ on convenience. Some people feed Purina not because it is available everywhere but because it is the only food their dog does well on. .

We may not like what's inside, but you've got to hand it to the marketing dept re the graphics on the Beneful dry food - absolutely beautiful!
