NUTRO food contamination

OK, that's cool.  And Sandra may not have read it the same way that I did......some raw feeders can be pretty hopped up on that being the ONLY way to feed a dog.  And some people just cannot bring themselves to do it!

Asthefurflies;  I am deeply regretting bring up feeding raw. It was in response to Ron's post about his wife getting ill after eating a medium rare steak. I didn't intend to steal this thread and turn it into another raw feeding debate. I shouldn't have responded to Sandra's post by going into why I would like to give Jessie some raw food. It came across as abrasive and was off topic for this thread.

Ah, but you weren't the only one on that topic, so don't give it another thought.  Me, I'm happy with my meat good and rare...so long as it's finished mooing!!

Thanks Glenda.[:)]  Personally, I prefer meat well done like Sandra. Also, I'm not all that enthused about feeding raw. Jessie's main diet is kibble. I was supplementing with a little raw for the reasons I stated above about amino acids and enzymes.

And I'm not against others feeding raw. It may be a problem for some dogs, as is some kibble. Whatever works for your dog is fine. Plenty of dogs here, anecdotally, are doing fine on raw, just as many dogs here are doing fine on many different brands of kibble. One or another could be a problem at some time. That's what I mean about a risk in any type of feeding style. Just as there is a danger, even if slight, of a dog choking on a bone fragment. It doesn't happen every day, but sometimes it can. And that's what I meant about the possibility of the dog in the OP being PTS. The owner immediately went and got a grinder and converted to full raw, which makes me wonder if she's been introducing some raw now and then. Others might have simply gone to a second kibble they have used with no problems.

And we're all awaiting updates. No one ever answered as to which MSU she sent the stomach contents to. If the timing on the animal police shows is anything, it usually takes no more than a day to perform a necropsy. And she wouldn't have to go far. It would be about 30 or 40 minutes to get to the Houston SPCA. And they can find preliminary results that day as to what led to a seizure. Whether it was something that was eaten, or the result of a tumor, or whatever. I do understand, though, that it may take more time to get results back on the stomach contents if it was shipped across country in a biohazard container. Cause of death is euthanasia.

BTW, how long was it until Diamond published a recall from when they first knew of a problem?

Jessie's Mom, I didn't take any offense.  After previously being told by someone else that I didn't love my dogs because I didn't feed like they do, that I was to old to change, and several other statements like that, I saw nothing wrong with what you said.    And yes, i do watch the  salt. The canned veggies i buy are unsalted. To be truthful I much prefer to feed them fresh caught and baked fish.  I can promise you this, there are not many dogs that get flounder (filets go for about $8 a pound in the grocery store here), sea trout, etc.  My dear sweet 17 year kitty that passed to the bridge a week ago last Monday ate so much fresh caught fish that she turned her nose up at any canned or dry food that was suppose to be fish.

And Glenda, thank you for standing up for me  when you thought my feelings might be hurt.

Once in a while, my cat, who usually ate and prefered DeliCat by Purina, loved to eat raw fish that I would bring home from a catch. It was only a couple of times a year. Usually perch and striper caught at a private lake we have access to. I would painstakingly clean all the meat of the bones onto a saucer and she would sit at the sliding glass door ( I did the cleaning on the patio) and meow constantly, telling me to hurry up.

No problem Sandra!  Us old farts gotta stick together! [;)]

If mines not mooing I dont want it!  Heck, dont even bother cooking mine! [;)]

Jessies_mom, no problem.  I was just making a statement because I couldn't understand your aversion to raw meats for the dogs.  It's easy for these threads to get sidetracked. They usually do at one point or another :)

I am an old fart, too.

I don't understand why you're so afraid to feed raw

I did try feeding Jessie some raw beef, fish, and pork in addition to her kibble for about a month. I never fed her raw ground meat because of possible e-coli contamination. Things went well until she had a soft stool with mucous followed by a liquid stool a short time later the day after I fed her some raw beef. I decided to cook her meat after that because I thought it was likely that bacteria in the meat caused the loose stool.  Last week I tried raw meat again. I fed her a quarter cup of raw beef and the next day she had the same stools. I know the theory about a dog's stomach acid killing bacteria, but as I said in the other post I don't know  know if that's been proven. I brought up the fact that a dog's digestive track is short in regards to their ability, or lack thereof, to digest cellulose and make use of nutrients from vegetative matter. As to a dog's short digestive track protecting a dog from becoming ill from injested bacteria; I have no idea if that's true or not. There may be a scientific study showing it's true but I'm not familiar with one.
I'm glad that your dogs are doing well on raw food and that you're comfortable with raw feeding. I am comfortable with feeding my dog a kibble which has digestive enzymes and probiotics and supplementing it with lightly cooked meat, (medium rare), and pureed fruit and vegetables.

I am an old fart, too.

I have four grandchildren and can remember when television screens were round and ten inches in diameter, and I used to get into trouble for playing in the coal that was used to heat our house, so count me as one too.[:D]

Hey, you got me beat.  I only have 3 grandkids, ages almost 7, 4 1/2 and just  turned 3. (I am keepinger her tonight, DIL's birthday) Both our boys were 30 before getting married.  One went his wife 5 years, the older went with his wife for 7 years.  I had about decided neither would ever marry.

I graduated in '63, class of 22 seniors and old "old lady" who had gone to night school (her oldest child was a sophomore that year) and asked if we minded if she walked down the aisle with us and we thought it very neat and said of course she should.

I wish i could feed raw or partially raw to my dogs, but I just can't bring myself to do it.  When i cook bacon, you can hold one end and it stands straight up like a board.  One of my nieces that visits often likes her's "floppy" and I have the hardest time trying to make "floppy" bacon for her.

It was reported on another board that the poster had contacted the company and they said they had not had any more reports of illness.  But test results are not in yet.  And as I said, this very well could be a case of tampering in the store.  People are so sick today I wouldn't put it past them.

Recently our grocery store chain, HEB had to pull all baby food from shelf after pieces of glass was found in their brand food in Houston, Corpus and I forget the other town.  If you don't live in Texas, you probably never heard of HEB. They have a HUGE warehouse across the street from my hubby's terminal.  And they have a strangle hold in this area and outside of super walmarts, every other grocery store has gone out out of business around here.

(pouting)...my oldest son is 28 and has been with the same girl since 7th or 8th grade with a few little breaks when she or we moved.  He's been with her STRAIGHT for 8 or 9 years, so there is a SERIOUS commitment there, but no ring yet and no grandbabies......sigh.
